Here's how to play the original version of Death's Gambit from 2018
Hi fans we know that some of you still want to be able to go back and play the original version of Death's Gambit so here are the steps for that:

1. Right click Death's Gambit on your Steam library list.
2. Select Properties...
3. Select BETAS on the left side of the new window
4. Click on the button that says "Check Code" and make sure you didn't write anything under "Enter beta access code to unlock private betas:"
5. You should now see something popup above mentioning you now have access to the originalgame branch. Select that and Steam should ask you to update Death's Gambit
6. When the update is complete, press play and you should be playing the original Death's Gambit.

Please do not load a save file from Afterlife in the old original game. This will likely lead to crashes. That said, you can easily load a file from the old game in Afterlife itself

Instead of having to do that, why not have an option in game to choose between the two games? Or for that matter, have two standalone versions of the game available on steam like other games do?

It seems very convoluted to have to go through the beta branch selection in steam every time you want to switch between original and afterlife; and it's entirely not intuitive for players to know to do this without having seen this post.

Based on what I read, it seems like they view this is as the definitive version of the game, so it doesn't really make much sense for future players to jump around between the two, and this way the install footprint is smaller.

I'm sure there are various reasons they didn't do a standalone version, but one of them may be because Death's Gambit isn't as big a game like a Binding of Isaac, for example, which has way more pull to ask players to go to a new store page because of its popularity.

This is a pretty common thing honestly, and it's extremely easy to do. The dev even provided easy and clear instructions, which not all devs do :)

As the above person said, it is a simple change and doesn't require having 2 installs of the game, even if it is small, it's still a much more convenient and wise choice.

You're right. People can make excuses all day, but it would be far more customer friendly just to have two downloadable versions. I have a handful of games that did this with their definitive version. However, I very much doubt we will see said change. I love the devs for their boss fights, and the original story, but that's it. They constantly make bad/puzzling decisions.

It's.... a very, very simple process and takes all of 3 clicks. Idk why you're acting like they're peeing in our faces.

It's not like Disco Elysium, where the devs did a similar thing (add some free content - but NOTHING close to the level of the devs of Death's Gambit, who freaking doubled their game - for free ) those devs didn't even offer a beta branch, so you have to either go through a TRULY convoluted process, and install a second version of the game, AND it has to be played in offline mode, all just to be able to play the version of their game before the free update.
Which they still haven't updated in months or addressed bugs.

These guys added an insane amount of detail to the base game that already existed, dramatically changed and upgraded the game in so many freaking ways, added QOL changes, SO so much. AND THEN continued (and still continue) to patch the game constantly, to make sure it runs good and works well for everyone.

and also provided a beta branch so you could seamlessly and easily choose between which version you want to play, with logical save transferability, with a few clicks, and even provided you with the instructions on how to do so.

How anyone could complain about this is beyond me entirely

Disco Elysium for example, changing multiple character voice acting, and completely altering how everyone plays their game forever with a forced, dull narrator as part of their Huge Free Update:

All they would have to do is have a beta branch, and all their players and fans would be happy.

Only thing that I'm concerned with at this time is that they replaced the Kick with a Slide Kick. Would I have to revert back to the previous version in order to get the achievement for killing Owlking with Kicks only?

Did the slide-kick work for the Achievement?

Slide kicking works perfectly fine. No need to go back for any achievement.
