Besides that nothing new about hating the souls comparison. Hard? Souls! Death penalties? Dark!
In that case then super meat boy is the dark souls of platformers and pubg/fortnite is the souls of fps
EVERY good looking sword swinger hero 2d game must be a Dark Souls clone
these days. Its not enough to have the beautiness of the pixel world, the exploration spicked with SOME difficult locations and beatable bosses with NORMAL skills.
No, it must be a masochistic hardcore experience where some deadly bored guys must compare with another or themself. Salt and Sanctuary -> FAIL, Dead Cells -> FAIL,
Death's Gambit -> FAIL. ->Many love in the game, but...just another Dark Souls clone.
All the hopes rest now in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
Maybe a clone, too, but if it's like sotn then it is playable for EVERYONE, not only
for the e-e-sports faction. :(
Conclusion: Death's Gambit is a beautiful, impressive pixel work but only for a special
kind of player, but unhappily not for me.
Have you tried Curse of the Moon yet? That game's literally a NES CV clone from IGA, sounds right up your alley, and I can vouch for it being amazing.
Not yet. I have no problem with the old 8bit style, but its a welcome bonus to have a little bit
more immersion with nicer graphic (maybe 16 or 32bit ;)
But i will play it next time as i also will play Mini Ghost. :)
Oh. I have time now! My last hope (Death's Gambit) seems to be a disappointment.
The best is: i can play Curse of the Moon on the vita.
Thanks for reminded me @Omega Preacher.
Now Death's Gambit in terms of difficulty, if you panic you will probably die, is it somewhat merciless there, and also the game lets you walk into areas before you should go. Now if you walk into a new area and is seems impossible, then you probably shouldn't be there, go back and find another way to go. The game's punishment for death is very light, bordering on not even really being one, so really it's not an easy game but I think its less harsh than Dark Souls, and also so far save points have been fairly positioned to avoid too much repetition. 90% of my deaths have been to the first two bosses. Boss fights are definitely a challenge, but they're not awful (like 90% of Dark Souls bosses).
Grinding is easier if you resort to that because the game never strips you of shards.
(And Curse of the Moon is GREAT)
Yes, its also roguelite, but challenging combat/difficulty and style are 2d souls like, or not?
Anyway. Maybe nearly all beutifull 2D Platformers are chalenging like dark souls.
It's a plague. :(
quake type games are the hardest fps, pubg is one of the easy fps games
I think the style is very different. Dark Souls is very dark and bleak fantasy while Dead Cells is actually quite upbeat, there's a lot of humor in there and lots of colors. And the gameplay itself is very fast paced aching more towards games like Strider.
And I mean EVERY game with a very hard+ option would be challenging/difficult.
Death's Gambit on the other hand is probably the textbook example of a 2d soulslike and while it has a number of new interesting features it feels and plays like Dark Souls in 2d.
I will wait some time, some patches and then i will make my attempt to love and beat the game.
That said sadly I'm about to refund due to some issues I have with the mechanics... Mostly clunky controls and high damage combined with weak hit feedback and way too high stamina costs which just make it unenjoyable for me for now.
