What to do after dark knight? [spoilers]

So I've killed the dark knight, and I have 2 ways to go, as far as I can tell. I can either kill the rat boss or I can go through the observatory. Is there something I'm missing? Both of these seem too hard.

What rat boss?

If I recall correctly, the order for "post-Thalamus" goes:
Darkness Falls(Dark Knight) < Garde Tum(Bysurge) < Journey's End(Eldritch Council) < Almuvero's Observatory(Almuvero) < Immortal Citadel(The Endless)

There is also an optional boss called "Cusith" which is in the section of Rider's Passage before Owlking, but can only be accessed after getting the Gaia Crest.
