Report a translation problem
The anime fan/weeb definition/understanding of the term doesn't necessarily have a negative/perjorative context depending on who uses it (at least in their eyes, some might disagree, I'm not going to get into that), especially when they exclusively apply it to fictional characters.
However, outside of said group, yeah, it's become an offensive term when applied to the trans community. Whether it be because the term migrated outside of its origins or because it predated the anime fandom definition of the term, I don't know. That's all I'm willing to explain on that because I have no interest in opening that can of worms. A quick Google search would tell you more.
Not trying to open a can of worms but I believe in a lot of anime traps are more akin to crossdressers than they are to transgendered people. Traps are just supposed to be anime characters/people that are so androgynous that they can pass as the opposite gender. At times you'll see these characters freak out when they realize that someone thinks they're a girl (or a guy for reverse traps) or they specifically just ignore any confirmation one way or another. I'm sure there are actual transgender characters that get translated as traps though and that there is a lot of miscommunication all around from something that stems off of another language.
I find it funny though...because I still have a physical disk at home of "The Royal Trap" that doesn't have the subtitle "The Confines of the Crown" on it and I was wondering for a long while what happened to the game in my Steam library only for me to find it under some random name I just assumed was from a junk humble bundle before. The box's synopsis has nothing to do with transgenders, traps, or anything at all that could relate to gender confusion so when the name was switched I didn't realize what the problem was with the old name until later on.
The new title isn't quite as snappy as the original. But I understand changing it. I don't specifically go seeking GLBTQ titles, so my frame of reference is limited, but I loved this story for all of its twists, and its the best tale centered on a trans character that I've ever played.
