Chris Sawyer's Locomotion

Chris Sawyer's Locomotion

OpenTTD
Is there any reason I should play this over Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe, considering OpenTTD is open-source and thus much better developed, bug-tested, etc., or are there features in this that I am not aware of?

This game is from 2004 from what I can see on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Sawyer%27s_Locomotion

So this is just a re-release of an old game on Steam.
This game is awesome, if you love OpenTTD, and want a little more curvy routes and don't have a PC that can run Train Fever reliably well, this is a good niche-fill. This is Transport Tycoon 2. I loved this game when it was out, bought it 10-12 years ago when it first came out and used to play it in the kitchen of my 1st house.

Love that "open-source and thus much better developed." Will it be another triumph of hope over experience?

This game is a classic, I already have it on GOG, will probably pick it up here in a sale though. I also have it boxed, and I have my old TTD disks (although I think they may be unreadable at this point.)

People aren't going to buy this game for the latest transport sandbox, they're going to buy it for sentimentality. It is about time it got to Steam.

The slightly nicer visuals and more realistic looking train tracks are pretty much the only thing this has on OpenTTD. Sadly enough nobody dares to give this game the same after-market upgrade as they did with TTD. As such I wouldn't recommend the game, even though I own a retail copy since forever and player it for quite a while.

There are things I like in this than things in OpenTTD. Granted everything can be made really quick and neatly in OpenTTD, you can make it just so much nicer in Locomotion. There's also by default Trams and those trains with the really tight tracks. They're a lot more fun to use, Trams even being complete profit bringers at the cost of having to drop down the expensive tracks first.

For instance you can chuck down a straight railway really easily in Locomotion but in OpenTTD making bridges and tunnels is literally just like changing track type.

It's more of a challenge if you like model railways than logistic simulators, but if you prefer just to manage vehicles and have things happen with no real worry for design then OpenTTD is your thing.

I'm sorry, but at release this game was a major dissapointment. OpenTTD is a far better game and far more worth your time investement. This game has a 59% metacritic score for a reason

OpenTTD's first stable release was on March 14th, 2004, and this game released September 10th, 2004. At the time, OpenTTD was just a buggy clone of TTD. Saying that OpenTTD is better now (10 years later) isn't being really fair, considering this game hasn't actually been updated since it's release. Now compare this to a OpenTTD build of 2004, that would be more comparible.

I do agree that (NOW, 10 years later -- mind you), that OpenTTD is better.

I agree with DarkenMoon. Back when Locomotion was released it was WAY ahead of OpenTTD.

For some man better is ttdpatch - i don't know, why.

What would be really amazing would be if OTTD could be put on steam and integated with Workshop. I fear however that both the OTTD community, steam, and technical difficulties (newGRFs and custom patches are not really workshop compatible material) would make that close to impossible.

OpenTTD's UI complexity is a bit high for old school tycoon games such as this so I would NEVER recommend OpenTTD, even with Locomotion's shortcomings

I completely disagree, and I'm certain there are many other OpenTTD players who also disagree with you.

Now, too complex for the minds of younger gamers who didn't grow up with it and are accustomed to games that spoonfeed you everything... Absolutely.

But its 2015 and OpenTTD is much better. There is little point to buy Locomotion unless you are collector.
SpaceYam Mar 19, 2015 @ 2:55pm
I bought it because it was cheap enough to overcome my laziness to find the CD and insert it into the drive in case I felt like playing it, does that count? :)
iemander Mar 19, 2015 @ 4:04pm
I didn't buy this game when it released because it sucked, so I'm not buying it now.

And the comparison OpenTTD vs Locomotion is moot, considering the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe was a much better game than Locomotion. Even if OpenTTD was buggy back in 2004, the original was still available.

I advise anyone against buying this game, as I mentioned before, it got a 59% metacritic score for a reason.

I can still feel the immense dissapointment I had with this game to this day.
