The beetle is a space ship, constructed with the help of the aliens to complete the challenge and housing one or two (I usually picture 2 inside it) humans. They are sent into space with the entire human race depending on them to complete the challenge and save humanity. After a long time of travelling through space they reach the challenge area, which is the 9 levels of the game. Each one is a stage of the challenge they have to complete, getting harder each time. I imagine that, after each level, they go back to travelling through space for a while, and every level is further and further away from earth until by level 9 they're at like, the edge of the universe. And also the technology of the beetle ship makes it so a video feed of it is being streamed live to earth (despite the distance it's instant thanks to the technology) and the view you get in the game is basically what every human on earth is watching through their TVs, knowing that if the person they sent in the ship fails, earth will be wiped out.
The ending is something I've wondered about how it fits into this, the human beats the face alien thing aka the challenge, and saves earth, but then instead of being sent back to earth they end up in that weird glitchy place. Maybe the aliens take them afterwards to "evolve" or something
