Shadow of Mordor vs. Shadow of War in 2024
I'm feeling a craving for "small open world" games, and I loved Shadow's Nemesis system, so I'm trying to decide which one to play. I've played about 20 hours of each, but think I enjoyed War slightly more due to the greater variety of environmental traps (e.g. Ghul and spider nests).

Have you not tried Batman: Arkham Asylum or Batman: Arkham City yet?

Shadow of War has more to do, but both fun. But 20 hours is not touching the fun. Yes the Game has bugs, cheats, and annoying video sequences, but plays a lot better than a lot of New Games. Usually I play more Military Based Games, but as most are lacking and PvP is for the less mature?, or Lack Game play, Like Sniper Elite 5 which to be honest is great graphics, but over priced. Shadow of War and Mordor were bought cheap as late into the Market as not usually my sort of Game, but I am an avid Tolkein Fan. Have completed both, but re-doing again, especially SOW, just to get 100% of everything, which is not a short task.

Funnily enough, I recently pushed myself to finish Arkham Asylum and then started City. My hope is to eventually finish the entire franchise, even though I rarely finish games. I constantly bounce between games in my library to keep things fresh.

I found Mordor to be pretty good but I really loved War.

Mordor is the Tutorial, so you have to play that one first.

Do you mean that you can't usually finish a video game?

At any rate --- Are you saying that you were never able to become immersed in either of the Arkham games?

Yes, I rarely finish video games, especially with my current lifestyle where I'm moving back and forth between my apartment (with a work laptop and GeForce Now) and my parent's house (with a proper gaming PC). Even if I get engrossed in a game, I get forced to take a break from it after a week, and I may or may not return to it.

I definitely enjoyed Arkham Asylum though, although I'm not sure I would call it "immersive". For me, that term is reserved for physically-reactive, "tactile" games like Prey or Subnautica.

I haven't played Prey 2017 (I assume that is what you mean?) or Subnautica. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "physically-reactive", though. Would DOOM 2016 be physically-reactive? Or Left 4 Dead 2?

Immersive Sim is really a terrible name for the whole genre. I personally think "Shock -like" better suits things like Prey 2017 and even stuff like Mankind Divided/BioShock/etc.

I avoid SoM because of the Quick Time Events and memories of traversing maps littered with the Weapon Upgrades late game (when you have everything you need/want and they still drop).

SoW dealt with those things better.

Personally I prefer War but others may have more nostalgia for Mordor.

Let me know what you mean by "physically-reactive" when you get a chance. I had not come across that term before.

I'm thinking a game like Prey with a large amount of physics objects, that make you feel as though you are physically present in the world.

In the case of Mordor / War, it would be the environmental traps such as Ghul nests or grog barrels.

Overall, Mordor if you do not want to get frustrated by the level gaps you may accidentally create in War.
In Mordor, you always have a chance no matter how often your enemy may take you down- in War you may suddenly face enemies WAY above what you are able to take on- One-Hit-Kills galore on YOU

Honestly, that sounds like a positive, not a negative. Dangerous enemies I have to flee from, and level up before facing them, would create a sense of rivalry, which is the whole point of the Nemesis system.
