You can only heal with drain. (Sadly it looks like the life steal gems are not working at all.)
There is a drain skill to quickly drain an enemy if your might is charged. To get it charged, put a skill into the perfect counter skill perk where you get might by countering.
It is crap that you need to invest a skill point to be able to heal that way, but it can help you a lot.
But for me, draining downed grunts works best (counter + "stealth" drain = full health).
and how do you "stealth" drain in the middle of combat?
If you place it in armor slot - health increase, weapons - life-leech, ring - follower damage resistance.
There's a special skill for it, don't remember the name (basically it allows you to "stealth" kill downed enemy during combat and modify it with either Fury / Extra counter / Drain).
But you are better off learning how to avoid getting hit in the first place, which becomes far more important at the higher difficulty levels.
There is a passive healing prestige skill in later game.
Some epic or legendary gears have healing effect.
Well... Just consider this is an assassination game with awesome smooth melee combat and special power system... There is a reason why you will have an option to analyse orc captains...
Honestly, you don't rely on healing in the later part of game, some orc captain has ability instantly empty a full health bar and push you into last chance situation. Especially Nemesis, Gravewalker and Brutal difficulty, you are supposed to take nearly no direct hit damage in combat.
YOu can check it by hoovering the mouse on the skill.
It is this one

I have the feeling the gems don't work. Never saw a single HP dropping into my HP pool. Have upgraded green gems in both dagger and sword.
I just need to find the will to open the game again, after dying on the 4th or 5th Captain in the Arena
Even Dark Souls has healing potions you can drink in combat
It is just Tailon and the New Ring being too IMBA in the game, no actual need to rely on healing items...
Spolier alarm, don't read this if you don't want to know the ending of Tailon:
As Shelob has foreseen, if it was Tailon with the New Ring faced Sauron, Sauron would be defeated completely, and Celebrimbor would enslave Sauron. However that future of Middle-Earth is unknown, as Celebrimbor and Tailon will definitely turn into a conflict with each other on ideology after the defeat of Sauron.
Currently working towards the 'Consume' skill for combat drains.
