Motion controlled bow & arrow aiming How-To (BotW style)
Turns out the Steam Big Picture mode controller customization is flexible enough to get a pretty close approximation of the motion control aiming Breath of the Wild uses on WiiU (and also Switch? I haven't played it on Switch, so I don't know).

Anyway...

The way it works is when you hold the left trigger, the gyro comes on and takes over for the right stick, making aiming easier for some of us.

Here is how I did it:

First, I am using a DualShock 4 with the Sony wireless dongle. I got it at Best Buy on clearance last winter for $7. I'm sure it's available somewhere (probably for more than I paid, though) if you don't already have one. The following might work with other controllers that have a gyro, but I dunno.

- In Steam Big Picture Mode, find the controller customization for SoW (SoW>Manage Game>Controller Configuration)
- Click on the SixAxis rectangle right below the controller diagram
- Set Style of Input to "Mouse Joystick"
- Set Gyro Enable Button to "Left Trigger Full Pull"

That's it. Now when you pull the left trigger to raise your bow, the gyro will come on and you can use the controller itself to aim. Here are a couple adjustments I made in the Additional Settings menu that you might like:

- Set Minimum Joystick X Output Value to .25
- Set Minimum Joystick Y Output Value to .25
- Set Enhance Small Movement Precision to .5

A couple more things while we're talking control customization: I found it inconvenient that Reset Camera was mapped to R3, so I swapped that with LB. Makes it easier to control what I'm seeing while running and fighting. Though, it caused brief confusion when I tried to activate Elven Fury by clicking L3 and R3 when with the remapping, I should have used L3+LB.

The touch panel in the center of the controller can be configured so clicking the left end does one thing and clicking the other end does another. I set mine so the former is Select and the latter is Start (I use those buttons so often with this game that the hard-to-use ones labelled "Share" and "Options" are a bit of a pain). To do that in Controller Configuration:

- Click the touch pad rectangle above the controller
- Set Style of Input to "Button Pad"
- Assign the Select button to Square and Start to Circle

Happy Gaming!

Matt

Nobody will ever use this tutorial, dummy!

I was hoping someone could figure it out, because I've grown to appreciate gyro controls (It's both intuitive and engaging) and now thanks to your tutorial I know how to do it and will experiment with it in other games. Your efforts were not meaningless!

Hopefully you will see this message =)

Thanks to Steam's notifications, I did see this. Thank you for acknowledging the post. I have used this and found it worked well on the following games:

Far Cry: Primal
Ghost Recon: Wildlands
Battlefront II
Breath of the Wild on CEMU

Alas, the battery in my poor old DS4 finally went tits up and I won't be able to replace it until after a suitable mourning period. It's too bad, because this would probably work really well for Horizon Zero Dawn. Happy gaming!

Lovely to see, thank you.

BTW, I managed to figure out how to enable gyro steering in Forza Horizon 5 with a DualSense (PS5) controller... it's posted somewhere...

Dunno if I can post links here, but here goes:

https://www.reddit.com/r/DS4Windows/comments/qqamhp/comment/hkov5k2/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

If the link doesn't work, search Google for "forza horizon gyro dualsense how" and hit the Reddit result titled: "Driving with gyro on "FH5 : r/DS4Windows".

My post is the one by Adminttedly describing the settings.

Love,

Emma (I'm a girl now)
