Still P2W?
I'm thinking about buying this game, but when the game was released, was P2W...

It changed or remains with lootboxes and ♥♥♥♥?

Thanks :)

I don't think so

It was P2W, or microtransactions, I preordered the Gold Edition before it even released. So you imagine my horror when I go to the final act and was presented with a paywall asking me to buy lootboxes for legendary gear OR grind for hours and hours to complete the game.

I stopped playing and uninstalled the game at that point, only just now came back to it as a friend told me the P2W aspect had been removed.

And I'm also a gold owner and I can tell you that it probably wasn't. Orcs get spawned at your level and I'll tell you what, the enemy orcs were a much higher level than me. Shadow Wars were meant to be brutal.

I don't like Microtransactions but people to this day act like these ones were the anti-christ when there are infinitely worse ones out there like any Rockstar Online game or game by EA. It's important to stomp out these predatory practices but all the same we should be honest about how bad they are.

it's not about being a gold owner, someone could buy the gold edition today. It's about when you played the game. When it launched it was P2W, anyone that denies this didn't play the game at launch or is just trolling.

Or
Just spit ballin here, but..

Maybe people have varying opinions and dont see things the way you do.

I never considered it P2W considering the fact its a Majority SINGLE PLAYER game with OPTIONAL MP aspects.

Yeap, it definitely wasn't P2W, the sales definitely didn't tank as a result of that (they did) and the game will definitely get a sequel (it won't because this game sold so poorly).

Oh man, it's almost like I was, *drumroll* someone who played it literally day one.

So troll confirmed. I also played it Day One, got to the lootboxes at the end and immediately uninstalled it. You had to pay real money in order to avoid a very long grind. If someone wishes to call that P2W they can, because you did have to pay. Just because we have a couple of trolls in the thread doesn't change what the vast majority of people thought at the time.

Nope I played it through all the way to the end having opened only like three boxes early on, tried opening boxes later on post game but gave up due to how slow the process of opening them was. I brute forced my way through the shadows wars having only lost one siege,
I was gonna get offended but I realize in all likeliness you are a troll.
Not only do you just call people who disagree with you a troll, not only are you openly hostile, you're also peddeling blatantly false information that the game sold poorly.

The game did sell poorly, look it up. Also where's the sequel? It was cancelled due to poor sales. You are literally the definition of a troll.

https://steamcharts.com/app/356190

And showing an article at the same time that the game was released is irrelevant

All it says is
1: They cant provide exact figures
2: It didnt sell as well as a BATMAN game

More people are into Batman as a whole than LoTR, thats why it didnt sell as well as the batman game among other reasons.

Almost 1 Million sold in the first week isnt terrible imo.
Yes it was slightly lower than Shadow of Mordor, but still.

And throughout the years i'm sure they sold a bit more.

With that said
The loot boxes didnt bother me, in fact i kinda miss them.

Good job, you found on article. You know what I found, the ratio of reviews on steam are almost exactly the same and articles that use the same exact statistics as the one you did and also say it sold fine.
https://www.vgchartz.com/article/270446/middle-earth-shadow-of-war-sells-an-estimated-911000-units-first-week-at-retail/
"Compared to the first game in the series, sales are down. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor sold 1,035,243," meaning it only sold 100,000 less.
https://www.keengamer.com/articles/news/is-shadow-of-war-selling-well-after-its-great-controversy/
"Shadow of War's predecessor, Shadow of Mordor sold around 850,000 units in its first week. Quite the success story. Judging from the PC statistics above, it's safe to say Shadow of War is doing just fine; probably even better across the board."
To this day I can't find any statistics for sales after first week sales so for all we know it's actually caught up with Mordor.
Publishers are always greedy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who expect insane sales numbers that may or may not be realistic, I don't care they're disappointed.

EDIT:
Where's the sequel to Minecraft btw, god that game must have sold terribly.

Minecraft? You are a troll. They hinted at a sequel to Shadow of War in the DLC - where is it exactly? Monolith have abandoned the IP hotshot, they're now working on a sci-fi game.
Something tells me you dont actually know the definition of Troll in this context because you arent using it properly.

I created this topic because when this game lauched, was 100% ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥... you HAD to buy those lootboxes to get items to be able to defeat the bosses... I'm glad they changed that and now you dont need to pay, so...yeah, i got my answer anyway :)
you didnt "have" to. just play the game. i played it on xbox day one. beat the game without spending a penny before they took out the grind and slog of the endgame. You literally just had to grind out levels and orcs to beat it truly. please just dont say "have" to as it blatantly just isnt true. the grind WAS ridiculous but you literally HAVE to make that clear.
