Swapping Backed Up PC Saves
I routinely back up saves but have not had the need to use them with this game. I find the save in the "remote" folder as a .sav file.

Has anyone had to swap out save files, and did you have any issues?

I want to start another playthrough but I do not want to lose my 60 level main toon. I do not really want to open another account on steam, so save swapping is the path I need to go.

Has anyone routinely swapped out save files and did you have any issues I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have myself and haven't had issues but there is two locations where the save could be stored.

In Appdata/local/wbgames/shadow of war.

Or Steam/userdata/steamid(numbers?)/356190/remote

I noticed that when I deleted the .sav file from the userdata folder the save still existed so I had to overwrite the save in the appdata folder to use the old or other save.

edit: I noticed as well that it seems that (at least on my laptop, when it was offline - not connected to steam, well steam in offline mode) that the save file is located in that appdata folder, since when I deleted it from userdata it still had my save.

Store the 03eec3ab_ShadowOfWar.sav from the remote folder. If you want to load the game again, you overwrite the file in the remote folder and in the folder C: / User / Username / AppData / Local / WB Games / Shadow of War.
It is important that you switch off the synchronization with the Steam Cloud beforehand, otherwise you will get the online game versions back when loading.

I will keep that in mind, but each time I was doing this I wasn't connected at all to the internet, I was doing this on my laptop with steam in offline mode. I was playing SoW a lot more on may laptop since during the weekends when I had more time I was out of town on vacation and at my cabin had no internet access.

So I think is the userdate folder the file from the cloud? and I am guessing the appdata one is the local save? if it doesn't use the cloud it uses the appdata one then? <This is at least what I expereienced on my laptop, where when I deleted the .save file from userdata, I still had my regular save - but when I deleted overwritten the save from app data with the one I backed up then it worked.

Both the Save from the romote folder and from the SoW folder are identical and both local.
If you delete only one, the other is loaded.
If you play completely offline only information about how your content from the market last looked, but no scores.
If you play online again and the synchronization is on, then most likely your current score will be overwritten to the state of the last cloud storage.

Although I never play completely offline but constantly with Save change without a cloud.

So always overwrite both at the game stand change!

@bmind. Is it correct to say that when I make a back up save, that I want to use later, I need to save the files in both locations or just one since they are the same?

Then when I want to swap out different toons for different playthroughs, I need to swap out both (in the remote and SoW folders) or it will not work?

I have turned off online sync but have only been saving the .sav file from the "remote" folder.

Thanks again for any incite.

Such a pity after all this time and all the updates, that they can't give you any extra toons for some replayability. I have not bought the season pass specifically for this reason.

Only one 03eec3ab_ShadowOfWar.sav is enough.
No matter if from the remote or SoW folder, since they are identical. You just have to overwrite both files when writing back.

In the SoW folder you also have additional security copies created by the game, ..._ 1_ ... - ..._ 5_. (Why no access in the game).

So if you want to save the game in an earlier state, make a copy of it as well. To use them. rename in 03eec3ab_ShadowOfWar.sav and again in the remote and SoW folder overwrite.

I copy everything from time to time if something goes wrong.
But usually I just copy the ones from the remote folder and then write them back in both folders!

Thanks bmind!

What I am going to do is copy the entire remote folder, and the Shadow Of War folder and keep them both in a folder for a specfic toon. Then when I want to go back to that toon I will just drop those entire folders into the folders that house them and rewrite everything when prompted.

This should ensure that all the previous files are replaced with the saved toon. Or at least that is the hope.

I will keep a folder with each of the two folders (remote and SoW) for each different toon. I hope it works because I doubt I will buy another one of these without room for at least a couple of toons.

Very fun game but without much replayability.

With pleasure :)
I have created new folders for different games in the remote and in the SoW folder.
You can create up to 6 or 7 folders there before the game no longer finds the saves.
On the desktop A folder with shortcuts to remote and SoW, so the change is quite fast.
Then always put the saves in the appropriate folder.

Yes, more player profiles in game would have been good. Or a few memory slots.

But anyway, I love the game :)

You can't. Saves have the account's SteamID embedded in them and will only work for that same SteamID/Steam account.
