Common gear has no use I could find after the first few hours of the game. You can't even sell them, as near as I can tell. I suppose you might somehow beat a captain that's way above the levels of your current gear and get something you could use for a while but it sure never happened to me.
1.) Backup your savegame file ... send a legendary orc to the garrison via training order ... restore your savegame file and restart the game => You just cloned the orc. He is back in the fortress, but he is still in the garrison too. You can use it for backup your best orcs or to destroy an orc to get his legendary gear.
2.) Backup your savegame file ... upgrade your normal, low level orcs to the maximum and send them to the garrison ... maybe it costs a lot of Mirian, but nevermind ... restore your savegame file and restart the game. You now have your Mirian back and you still have the upgraded orcs in the garrison. You can deploy them back to the fortress then f.e. You get unlimited Mirian this way.
By combining 1 + 2 you can generate Mirian by destroying the gear.
3.) If you have cloned a lot of good orcs, you can deploy them to another not conquered fortress to repress the enemy captains. You don't have to beat them all. You also can use your deployed orcs as bodyguard or for attacking the fortress.
