Ironwill
I got to the post-game Shadow War and started looking for things to do. I got the bright idea to do the pit fights thinking my orcs will probably kick ass and the one time bonuses are worth it. Well they don't cuz a level 40 lost to a level 19. In the end I realized that I lost most of my army to these pit fights so I decided to go on a recruiting spree.

It's like 1 in 3 orcs have iron will and it's always the dang orcs with a bunch of resistances or enraged by everything that I have to slowly chip away hp from. Now it would be fine if I could just recruit them after twenty minutes of dodge rolling and hitting at the few attacks they aren't immune or enraged by but I haven't managed to break through the iron will of a single orc throughout my entire play through of shaming every single one of them. I even shamed the same guy who kept coming back to me to save his brother 3 times (in the same fight) before I said ♥♥♥♥ it and killed him. It was especially awkward since everytime he showed up big brother would get enraged which meant I focused on the little brother while he was distracted by my necro army and by the time I shamed the little brother the big brother's hp would go straight back to full. There's so many little things that annoy the hell out of me in this game.

TL;DR

How the hell do I get rid of iron will?

The game says shaming but so far I've had 0 orcs lose their iron wills no matter which version I used (normal and worst than death). Also, is there a notification that they lost their iron will during the shaming that I've never seen cuz they don't ever lose it for me?

always and only use worse than death, the chance is small in general.
You just had bad rng then, it happens. And if they lost iron will or not you have to search him and see if it worked. Your best place to get better Orcs in a very short time is prob online sieges right now - I got a full set of necromancer with decent traits only from doing those (and what ever comes your way). It takes away a lot of charme, I also do like to ''farm'' those in my own game.

But it is, what it is. Just a terrible Idea to make dominating orcs online possible.
I have 0 connection to around 90 % of my army. If you are sic of shaming, play online ~

no, there is no notification

using worse than death worked all the times for me

well, maybe only shamed 5 times, but allways they lost ironwill at first try

I'm too cheap to spend the 90k meridian I've saved up (Nothing feels like a permanent bonus to me), especially since I've used my orcs as disposible pawns who would probably turn against me at some point.

Making them stronger always worries me because when they're your enemy they're actually kind of tough. Yet they only seem to get in my way when they're on my side.

Is it worth the investment? I didn't even bother to upgrade fortresses or assaults since I just do everything myself anyways

dont use worse than death unless he's a betrayer or you want a maniac,
use normal shame twice should remove it most of the time, maybe i got lucky but i got 3 orcs iron will removed in a row,
After 2 shames iron will is impossable to remove apparently plus after two shames he losses stats.

I was going to ask this actually, does worse than death increase chance of removing ironwill or should you stick to regular shaming if you want to brand an uruk.
does worse than death increase chance of removing ironwill, as far as i know, no

Always use the "Worse than Death" upgrade for Shaming. It's better than it sounds because, like one commenter mentioned, the chance to turn the Orc into an uber-Maniac Orc is pretty darn low. I've played this game for a while and only ever had it happen twice. That said, don't rely on an orc's level to carry him through the Fight Pit. If you've got a godly orc that stomps everything in his path in a one or two attacks, he's going to lose eventually if he's got "Mortally Flamable", for example.

I agree on not using Worse Than Death - unless you want a maniac which you would then probably have to shame one more time to make him recruitable.

Worse than Death can add weaknesses. That's my understanding.

If you are trying to farm Legendaries, don't use the Online Fight Pits (Overlord battles). Rigged and you can't see anything and go in blind.

Use Champion-level fight pits and probably outside of Minus Morgul.

You can always level a Legendary after you get him. That is, find him in the fight pits and recruit him.

I have shamed a Captain 4 times to get rid of the Iron Will trait. There's only "X" chance each time and it will either work or it won't. Even with regular shaming, there's a small chance you can derange them or turn them into a maniac.

Maniacs DO get bonuses and sometimes potent ones. Deranged. Nope. Not as far as I can tell. If you get a maniac, you usually have to shame him one more time to bring him down to your level so he can be recruited.

Well I just murdered the enitre iron will group. Anyone with iron will shall now be hunted to extinction. I only managed to break 2 (I think... One for sure) iron wills. I'm guessing I can't fix a deranged orc?

Well online sieges seem to be the best in terms of exp, orcs and equipment except everyone is twenty to almost thirty level is above me XD. I'm assuming shaming orcs does nothing?

What's with the matchmaking? I was level 52 and I'm fighting mostly level 70+ orcs who literally one shoot me if they so much as graze me but damn is the exp and gear addicting. An overlord literally threw a knife at me at 100% hp and I died cuz he also had no chance XD. At least I'm level 56 in 2 successful sieges and one failed siege.

I also managed to grab two level 50 orcs and a bunch of legendary gear so I can rebuild my pit fighting force again. I spent all my Meridan making legendary orcs and giving them upgrades. I started with 2 legendary orcs and went up to five super tricked out orcs... They all died in the champion fight.

The RNG here is worse than XCOMs. In a couple of fights all my orcs had to do was touch the mortally injured by poison/fire guy with his weapon. In another fight an orc got dazed by carragors (or maybe it was animal attacks I don't remmeber) so I sent my captain riding a dire caragor and we still lost because my captain couldn't hit the enemy for a full minute until the dire caragor died.

I use "worse than death" all the time. I found that, iron will is ALWAYS removed when shaming destroys the orc's mind. (IE: when they become like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, they don't even talk anymore). So, if an Orc is particularly difficult, I just keep shaming them with worse than death until they become idiots. After that, I can recruit them, 100% success rate. Sometimes they get deranged, but I can always train them again to epic or legendary status. Sometimes they become "maniacs", that means, they outlevel me, but since i'm level 80, a maniac can only surpass me by 5 levels, so, no big deal either.

Other than that, I would advice you to stop doing pit fights, they are not very good in terms of orcs adquisition. Just do online vendettas till level 70, or shadow war (offline) sieges, and you'll level up very quickly.
Online Sieges is where you'll want to go. Best orcs are there.
