If you like game series like Far Cry, Assassins Creed, Arkham, etc those are a better comparison than the games you mentioned.
and the combat is really fun
online vendeettas and fortress siege and online pit fights are endless
and with some dlc there will be a lot more things to do, new regions, new characters new enemies
It didn't really slaughtered or butchered the lore, it's just placed one or two MINOR, and somewhat OVERLOOKED details that Tolkein written to make it fit more perfectly.
An example can be such as Helm Hammerhand or Isildur, or Celebrimbor - they are mentioned but it's very VAGUE or SIMPLY WRITTEN OFF - vague enough to do something as Monolith did with them in their story.
Although Necromancy is somewhat more indulged into, where Tolkein's stance on Necromancy was pretty much only possible by like, 3 Maiair or something like that? Or that it was only an artform of power that primordial-level of power people can use like Sauron/Morgoth?
They did take some liberties with "Non-Canonical-Impossible" Characters such as Eltariel, an Assassin of Galadriel, but still, there isn't much on characters like Galadriel on the grand scheme of Middle-Earth, just sentinel-like individuals who've been supposedly given power and duty to PROTECT the cycle of Middle-Earth's world.
And yes it has TONS of replayability, once you've gotten the main Story bits out of the way you'll have a fun time in the Nemesis System alone - not that the Story Questlines are bad but they're enjoyable for the most part.
Free Updates also are making the game more replayable, such as we can let our Forts fall into enemy hands so we can recapture them endlessly now, as previously we couldn't of.
Its really if want to get the DLCs or not. The loot chest from the gold edition doesn't really matter too much in game. My suggestion is to get the regular edition if you want to try it out and get the season pass if you end up liking it. Getting the base game and the season pass is roughly the same as getting the gold version minus the loot box (which again does not matter)
As for the topic, I really love the replayability, there are tons of different ways of taking out tons of different captains at any given moment. I do understand the argument that it can get a bit repetative or grindy at times, but it only feels like that if you do not like the style of the game itself. I suggest watching a few videos of combat (the sieges, one on one combats, fight pits, and a story mission)
