Enabling large page mode
Trying to do this pops up an error saying that this requires administrator privileges-- but I'm the only user on my computer. By default, I have admin privileges, don't I? How do I enable large page mode?

I believe you need a microsoft account.
So if you normal log into your computer with an Offline account that may be the issue, although not entirely sure just a thought.

run steam as administrator, it should work.

I do have a Microsoft account, though. I'm running this on WIndows 10 with the Creators Update and whatever else; it's all patched up, has 16GB RAM, a GTX 960M video card, etc etc.

Am I not running Steam as administrator already? I'll try it and get back to you.

You can run just the game as an administrator:
-right click the game in your library and go to properties
-pick the "LOCAL FILES" tab and press "BROWSE LOCAL FILES..."
-This should pop up the ShadowOfWar folder now open the x64 folder
-right click on ShadowOfWare.exe and choose to Run as administrator.

this. You dont need an MS account to run as admin, just a local account with admin rights. By default your C drive has limited permissions to protect it, so you have to explicitly state that you want an application to run in admin mode. I think this is stupid for a game though, as you shoudl rarely need to run an application with admin priv

thanks, guys, that worked! I just navigated to the file and ran it as administrator, then enabled the option in the game and rebooted my computer. done and done.

Nope, nevermind. Every time I restart, Large Page Mode gets disabled, and then requires me to restart to enable it, but then it's disabled, and requires me to restart to enable it, but then...

I had to restart my PC after checking the box. not restart the game. I do believe it turns on settings in windows that requires a restart.

What does Large Page Mode do again?

yeah, sorry if that wasn't clear, i was talking about restarting the PC itself, not the game.

TESTED AND SOLVED:

I figured this out:
instead of right-clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator" on the .EXE, go into the .EXE properties,

and in the Security tab, click the "Run as Administrator" checkbox.

Click "Apply". Click "OK". Exit the .EXE's properties.

Reboot the computer.

Run the game.

Go to the advanced settings, and enable Large Page Mode.

Apply settings.

Reboot just for luck.

Voila. It's done. Basically, just running the .EXE with Admin privileges once in order to turn the setting on won't do, since the game needs to use admin privileges each time in order to use large page files.

As far as I can tell, it allows the game to create larger page files and "assign faster memory to the game" by assigning it large, dedicated virtual memory page files even if something's running in the background. Made my loading times a little faster.

Any word on if this actually helps performance?

It might reduce stuttering ingame as you move around in the game world. And it needs to stream in new assets into memory.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium and found that selecting the 'Run as Administrator' option wasn't working for me, it still wasn't letting me enable large page mode in game.

I worked out it was because the lock pages in memory option wasn't enabled in group policy.

Solving this problem will depend on your version of Windows and whether or not you have access to Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).

Start here and follow the steps to enable the lock pages in memory option:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190730(v=sql.105).aspx

If that works, then great, you should be done and the option should work in SoW. If however you find that you can't follow those steps because you don't have gpedit.msc, then you will need to follow these steps first:

https://www.askvg.com/how-to-enable-group-policy-editor-gpedit-msc-in-windows-7-home-premium-home-basic-and-starter-editions/

Once you've successfully done that, then go back and do the steps in the first link and it should work.

You may have to restart before the new group policy takes effect. Then just activate large page mode in SoW and you're done.

Goodluck. You should notice some improvement in performance when you're done.
