I don't go looking for SJW ♥♥♥♥, this was just so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blatant. It's obvious that she is a badly written SJW character.
Baranor I don't really get that vibe from. He actually seems to have a personality. Not a great one but at least hes got somewhat of a personality and not as hackneyed as Idril.
I don't seem to recall Idril ever saying anything that couldn't be summarized as "blatantly contrived girl power third wave feminist propaganda"
Like I said I try not to go looking for SJW bs in games so to even have this register for me means (to me) that it's pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad.
I didn't get that vibe from Baranor but Idril....oh boy she might as well replace all her lines with "I am woman hear me roar" xD
She is so annoying and her character as a whole is just very...:unlikable.
I don't much like the Gondor quests, though I am enjoying the Carnan and. Bruz ones
Eowyn was just fine. She didn't take it to such obnoxious levels. Plus she was actually likeable imo. She was a nice contrast to Arwen as well as a nice companion to complement Merry.
Part of what I really liked about their fight was that Eowyn to me was not a predecessor to the SJW Turd Wave feminazis.
Eowyn and Merry, to me, wanted to fight because they knew that the very survival of Middle Earth was at stake. So if the Free Peoples ended up losing Eowyn and Merry preferred to die fighting.
Her triumph over the Witch-King was always, again in my opinion, more about good versus evil. Considering that Merry was just as important in the Witch King's death as Eowyn.
Again this is obviously my opinion but that's how I interpret it. As being a result of grander ideas of good triumphing over evil rather than pushing some feminist agenda.
It's one of many reasons I think LOTR has remained so timeless.
Now contrast Idril. She comes off as extremely unlikeable. Basically she has a REALLY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ irritating Napoleon complex crossed with an obvious SJW mindset.
She has no likeable qualities whatsoever and all she seems to do is whine.
At least Baranor is sympathetic what with his past and its parallels with his present situation in the fall of Minas Ithil. I liked Baranor, he was proud yes. He was also someone who seemed to both have a brain and a likeable sympathetic personality.
Neither one of them is as memorable (sorry to be a broken record, but in my opinion) or likeable as Bruz or Ratbag. They are very distinctive, have memorable personalities, hell they even go through Arcs.
Ratbag starts out as a stereotypical Uruk, but he does end up becoming something a LITTLE bit more noble than the rest of his kind and even demonstrates some positive emotions.
Bruz I won't go into but his character is almost fascinating to me. Plus he's as funny as Ratbag at times.
My point is that Monolith can write some good characters, the nemesis system is proof of that alone. But they also wrote some good ones in a traditional sense.
Seeing an extremely unlikeable, poorly written, badly characterized one like Idril makes her stand out bc by any metric she's just awful.
There's nothing likeable about her, she's arrogant, constantly doing stupid ♥♥♥♥ to try and prove herself to people who never seem to hold misogynistic opinions towards her anyway (I mean she's already a freaking officer in Minas Ithil) and is ENTIRELY one dimensional.
She feels completely shoehorned into the plot. I suspect that she is. Now I am not finished the campaign but Idril so far has done NOTHING important. I'm about halfway complete and they could have removed her entirely and nothing would be any different. It would have been just as easy for Castamir to have made his choice in order to protect the people within the city and it would have made just as much sense.
All the other characters have at least some purpose. Baranor is the least important of them but he still serves a role that is somewhat important. He's the link to Gondor. Just like the Ranger Deserter from the first game.
I would not be surprised if she was written in after the story was finished bc Monolith was afraid feminazis would ♥♥♥♥♥ and whine about no women being in the story. Rather than just trying to create a story. In fact that's what I think happened. Either that or some SJW douchebag at Monolith threw a hissy fit bc they want social justice in video games. Either way ♥♥♥♥ Idril. She sucks and has no place in this game.
They could've written a female character who makes sense and is even likeable. Even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SHELOB is more sympathetic and likeable than Idril. A massive Spider that is pure ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ evil is more sympathetic than Idril. That says a lot.
In summation, Idril sucks. She's annoying as ♥♥♥♥, she contributes nothing to the plot (unless that happens in the last couple missions of Act 2 or at some point in Act 3) , and her decisions are so stupid they almost defy logic. Especially the one she makes after the fighting pit mission.
Idril is literally the most annoying video game character I've encountered in years. As someone who doesn't go looking for SJW influence in games that should speak volumes about how unbelievably annoying I have found her. One of the most annoying video game characters I've ever encountered.
Her fancy cups and giant stone statues are worthless without anyone to admire or remember them.
She just makes so many obviously ridiculous and selfish decisions. I cringe every time I see her now, hoping that she won't be a part of my next quest.
So true, another good angle I totally forgot to mention in my OP. I understand wanting to save a couple things like a book, but she went overboard to the point where she didn't give a damn about the actual people.
She's the cringiest video game character I've seen in years
