It's not appearing out of thin air - he's always had this weakness, it just didn't display until you fulfilled the conditions for his weakness to be meaningful.
EDIT: for he had the same two bodyguards prior to the aforementioned, with no weaknesses, etc.. (not going to re-type, but yeah).
EDIT: It does get annoying when it randomly happens like that tho.. Not the first time, that was just one example.
As said, this wasn't always the case, must be a recent change or issue that has arisen since the last patch.. But yeah, if intended, it definitely needs to be refined and fixed in some areas.
Did they have anything else that showed terrified on them, or was it empty as a weakness slot?
I also have several warchiefs that have this, though they didn't just suddenly get it like yours.
It's also possible for your warchiefs to gain a possessive master (which is pretty good actually) hate or something similar.
Example: 1 orc recently went in with vulnerability to stealth and having 2 dazed effects.. When he was done leveling, he only had vulnerability to stealth. Another had a terrified negative effect (forget which one), but after a fight, there was no more terrified weakness.
I don't think orcs can gain weaknesses from fighting/leveling in the fight pits. Just strengths, or loosing weaknesses, or nothing but levels
If they survive, it usually means a stronger orc, or pretty much the same, just a higher level.. If done enough times, but yeah.. I should mention however, that I only use the champion pit fight.
got yesterday an insane pitfight a lvl 27 maggot vs my lvl 47 quicklevel orc
(was a longrage poweshot fighter who always dazed and never go in meelee range!
really strange )
i was angy because the lvl 27 scum with serious mortal weaknesses won ! ;)
so i branded him to let him die in the arena .
after some matches he got to max level and left with 3 of the minor "tipps" weaknesses
no dazed no terrifyed no mortal .
Sometimes you get really interesting results example what is better for defense .
warchief with 2 bloodbrothers boddyguards or a warchief with 2 boddyguards who all get enranged about eachother .
i would say the enranged combo wins.
