You play games because you enjoy playing them. You do not feel the grind when you enjoy what you are doing as you are just playing a game you like.
Microtransactions are designed to cut the time you need to play something to reap the rewards.
Now why would anybody want to cut down playtime of a game they enjoy? Who are microtransactions aimed at if the people who bought the game got it as they enjoy actually playing it?
They are aimed at everyone, because all they have to do to part people from their cash, is to stretch out the earned rewards to a point when gameplay stagnates, forcing you to pay money to enjoy the game, or get bored of it. They can (From experience in other games) actively repeat mission types, stretch travel time between them, maybe add a cooldown or two. They will try to make the game less fun to play for long periods, so you want to avoid grinding and buy their chests.
So you either play it in bursts and buy chests, or got worn down from repeating yourself too many times and ruin the game for you.
So when people say you have a choice, really you do not. They affect what you play so you cannot avoid them. This is a single player game (mostly) and should be treated like one. Not only that but these are not just cosmetics, they are actual orcs and weapons that effect play.
Now knowing that a single player game has a pay to win mechanic isn't the end of the world. But now add in a fortress mode that means anything you earn or even buy can be lost. Now we know little about this and if you can opt in, it wont be so bad. But if it is like FOB's on MGS4 then you will be raided when you are offline and lose your rewards. And those pay to win people have your stuff because they used their wallets. Prepare for a possible pay for insurance as well. Although this last paragraph is mostly conjecture from past experiences.
Shadow of Mordor is one of my favourite games. I had this game's full gold edition in my cart about 5 times because I loved the last but I just do not want to hate a game I love due to being forced to grind an experience activley made worse to part me from my cash.
Finding out about that questionable charity DLC was the last straw for me too.
Fully agree with what you wrote but just want to point out that they confirmed it that you will not lose anything as a Defender, only an Attacker (doing a Ranked Assault) will lose Captains if they die, and i believe you also cannot 'Steal' Captains from the Defender either.
Oh so it's not as bad as the FOB situation, thats good to hear thanks. I didn't see anything say that so I was just going off of what little info I had for that part.
Starting at minutes 2:10 Mark de Plater clarifies 3 points and the last one is that you lose nothing while Defending

Yeah that's good to hear, that whole mode lives or dies by wether you can or cannot opt in or lose rewards just for existing.
Sadly I still have my concerns for the other stuff but thanks for clearing that up and linking to it.
It will always FEEL like artificial grind if it takes to long for an Item to drop or Legendary Captain to appear and that's annoying enough, you will always be suspicious, especially since they also have set items and if that last set piece just won't drop you might start to believe its coded that way lol.
Edit: also, them pretending like it's them being helpfull to some people is just insulting. They could have easily just made ultra-easy mode, or even have "cheats" for people that do not have enough time.
Some of the people commenting they will not purchase the game. Trust me i've been clicking some of their profiles and some of them doesn't even have purchased game. Just free to play. Maybe they bought on retail? but I do believe that even retail is connected to steam so maybe pirate trolls.
Your chance of getting LEGENDARY CAPTAIN?
We don't even have LEGENDARY URUKS in SOM just URUKS we try to forge and have a good set of skills. So why bother with the legendary URUKS now? Don't we all grind to get that invul to range/stealth/ combat master URUKS?
We also don't lose captains/defenders so NO PROBLEM.
OUR CAPTAINS DONT GET STOLEN TOO.
If they want to rank high on PUBLIC ranking so be it. We dedicated SOM players can always play without multiplayers.
Also by runes I mean the Items that is dropped like armors/ weapon runes? dont we have that anymore?
