refrigeration is not necessary to preserve meat.
If you had a campfire going, you can hang the meat over the campfire and it'll keep pretty much as long as the fire's going because bacteria / pests can't get to it. This is made much more effective with a box around it to trap the smoke, which is where smokers originally came from.
You could certainly harvest the meat and cook it immediately. That's something that needs to be fixed, it's goofy and highly counterintuitive.
Snare is harvested - game code brings up the normal "loot items" box rather than automatically trying to move items. Game code checks for available storage space and available freezer space - if both are present, items "looted" are moved to the respective storage/freezer. If no freezer is present but storage space is available, move meat and leather to storage. Meat in storage has a "decay timer" added to it. If not eaten or put in a freezer in 1-2 days, it spoils.
That being said, at the very start of the game your first action should be to upgrade the Workbench to Tier 2, which will allow you to build the small freezer...
I agree with Dan.... This is highly annoying. We should be able to eat fresh meat before gathering all the materials to make a Level 3 Workbench to THEN be able to build a freezer )if that's how it all works).
To his point, did Mountainmen or Pioneers have freezers to store their meat? Maybe Salt should be added to the game or something....
Wouldn't it be cool, with all of the buildings you scavange through, to be able to find specific stuff (like a small fridge/freezer)? Of course, it would take up numerous slots in your storage to haul back... But it would add a cool treasure/bonus element to the game.
Just build a freezer if you still have this problem.
