How in the ♥♥♥♥ do you get food?!
No matter how hard I try I always seem to run out of food. I can never find any food on ANY expeditions, and as far as I can tell before you can get food from snare traps you need a freezer, which requires hinges and motors WHICH ALSO NEVER SHOW UP. Am I doing something wrong? Because if I am, it certainly isn't obvious at all.

Nothing you're doing wrong. It's the way the game was designed. Have to work backwards from the freezer.

tip: You don't need a freezer, there is an option to eat trapped animals directly from the trap. But you can't share that meal with other people.

tip2: don't accept any other people to your shelter until you solve food.

The learning stage is frustrating, but don't worry you will get better.

To be honest, I never needed to even use snares on Normal difficulty. Just simple explorations will net you lots of Rations.

As of this patch, it has been changed so that you can harvest meat right off the snares without a freezer, but you should still have a stove to prevent food poisoning from eating raw meat.

Each building on the map tells you what you may find there.

From your workbench, build the Lockpick and equip it on one of your party members. This unlocks any hidden items at that location. On normal difficulty, this unlocks guns, rations and many other things in houses of all sizes.

Lockpicks are level 3, you only start with 10 food. That will last you around 3 days, without luck of finding additional supplies. You will never get upgraded to level 3 Workbench in less than 3 days.

Depending on your expedition time, you are always likely to return dirty, tired AND hungry, so there is a strategy with this: send them both out again immediately! They wont get anymore hungry than they are already while on an expedition.

Another trick is only to eat when they are Malnutritioned and only have about 50% HP remaining. You can also work on getting Big Eaters to turn into Small Eaters by making them stay Malnutritioned for two days straight. Just use First Aid Packs (not Bandages) to heal the HP loss. Hell you can just survive "eating" the firstaids if you want.

Lastly, that radio in your shelter isn't as useless as you think... *Hint*
