I'm new to the game. How do I go about getting more storage space in my shelter. I only have 32 slots and that fills up quick. ALso, are there certain things that I should be doing first when the game starts. Just looking for some tips

You can upgrade your workbench from the start(click left upper icon in upgrade menu, i thought it's the current level initially) and then you'll be able to make a storage box, one should be enough for starting.
After that you should spend all available plastic to water butts for longer trips and easy trading source.

I do not have required materials to upgrade my crafting bench, so I am not able to get more storage quickly. I've been playing for two hours and still no ropes to upgrade a table. Sending expeditions constantly. Any recommendations?

You sure you're playing on normal difficulty? It always has enough material to upgrade workbench.
Level 1 DOES NOT NEED ROPES. You're making same mistake as me, your workbench now is "level 0", to upgrade it to level 1 press at icon in top left corner.

BTW use ropes on animal traps, even if you don't have freezer - animal fat is good for trading and animal skins are good for making bags.
