Spoiler-- When you go to kill them, There will be 4 people you will have to kill, 2 grenades or 2 excellent pipe bombs will kill them all. But you have to get the first attack, you must have a person with the "Courageous" trait so that you will get the first attack. If your person does not have the courageous trait, the bad guys may get the first attack and since you have to weather hits from all four of them you may get killed. I've never used the regular pipe bomb, so I do not know how much damage they deal.
the guy is gone from my map now.. i dont know why, when i set out they were just gone from my game. No dudes coming to ask for food either :( it was only 60 days after they showed up that i decided to go and kill them. Would i be able to handle their first wave of attack if i both my characters were wearing HBV? I will put potential spoiler on my title.
the gear i set out with initially was 2 snipers, 10 bullets, 1 grenade i found, 2 excelent pipe bombs, 6 first aid kits and 4 heavy vests, 2 of which i was already wearing.
i did use 2 people i converted though, they were not my "main branch" family members

Yeah, you would have killed them with 2 of the explosives. But using 2 people, 1 using an explosive and the other using the rifle would most likely leave one bad guy alive to counter attack. As this is an early game quest, your people were probably not trained up enough and you might have lost one of them. I have not used bullet proof vests in a long time, but the couple times I did my people were shot and killed. The description for the bullet proof vest says something along the lines of "protects the wearer against 3 gunshots, but in both cases I had a person shot and killed with 2 gunshots, so I branded them worthless and haven't used them since. There have been many game updates since then so I do not know if the dev's have tweaked the bullet proof vests. The game seems to be programmed that if you do not attack the protection racket people within a given time frame, they just go away. it happened in current game I am playing, My people weren't trained up enough to go after them, then when I finally came up with 2 grenades to go after them, they were no longer on the map.

If someone dies, whether they are family members or not, the people in the shelter suffer some trauma, and they may also have a good trait turned into a bad trait. I had a recruit die on an expedition once, and it changed the daughter's "Hands On" trait to "Hands Off" I just noticed, you asked if there was a downside to using explosives in combat, there is no downside that I ever noticed.

Courageous does not guarantee you attack first, that is dependent on Dexterity.

No idea, never used this

Same as grenade, maybe 92-100

Any downside
There is only a slight chance that Grenade and Excellent Pipe Bomb does 100 damage. Otherwise, always have both party members toss nades to clear the screen. So much for four 20 STR Corps members armed with Sledgehammers (if they are even 20 STR to begin with)
