Can raiders kill pets?

I recently started my first game where I have the dog, can it be killed during a raid or in combat?

Unless they changed it in the last update, I have never had the raiders harm the pet. They just walk past it. I am at day 409 in the hard setting right now, and they haven't touched the pet. (dog)
