STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter Special Edition

STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter Special Edition

1998 Edition is better then the Collector's Edition
I've seen lots of people complain that Steam didn't offer the Collector's Edition and they wouldn't buy it because of that.

Don't know about anyone else, but the 1998 edition looks better, sounds better, has a better resolution, and is just overall better.

1995 Collector's CD-ROM Edition:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h3GUgcDnQg

- low quality MIDI music and soundtrack
- low quality texture shading
- lower resolution

1998 Edition:

- high quality music and original score soundtrack from the movies
- high quality texture shading and detailing
- higher resolution

Seems to me the 1995 version is inferior.

biggest gripe with the 1995 Collectors CD edition is that although it has the lovely imuse, and the SVGA graphics are pretty sharp, the Dosbox emulation has a problem in that when its set to dynamic core and max cycles large ships and platforms don't open fire correctly, whereas if you set it normal core and set manual cycles you get crappy performance, so its not all a bed of roses. And the 1998 edition has that advantage, at least the cap ships and platforms behave as intended.
Funny thing is I never had that trouble on my pentium 90 back in 1995 :/
Interesting. Could you post a save on a mission affected by that so I can test? And what's the problem exactly? Are they not firing at all?

Good that u bring that up Colonesl Mustard!

The cutscenes being pimped up with extra star destroyers orbiting the planet turkana (check the X-Wing 1998 release) is seriously pathetic...in the original version those flew in formation...but the improved 1998 cutscene features Star Destroyer cutouts which go all over the place and make no perspective sense whatsoever..but hey its now like 8 instead of 3 flying in formation.
Also they removed some of the parts of the cutscenes.for example the hangar parts when exiting a mission and such. Back then u could tell your mission outcome by the tune iMuse played..if it was nice and cute u could be sure it was a success. Its just lil details but i agree lots of the improvements' come with a noticeable downside.

Yep, I had X-Wing and TIe fighter collectors cd, also got Dark forces back then. Many fond memorys of these Dos Games, When cds even were realativly new and X2 speed cd roms were a good thing to have. I have no fond memorys of this 1998 paint job trying to look like XvsT from the year b4. also the crappy way the hanger and people in the mission breifings look bring me no fond memorys other then how crappy and lifeless some windows 95 compatable games got.

Yep the Music is half the reason to buy the game, heck the music and the older graphics.

Good news is the GOG version now includes all 3 versons of X-Wing and Tie fighter for the same price.

Seems to me you're wrong, in pretty much every way. ;)

Seems to me it's my opinion, which can't be wrong.
And neither can yours.

1998 Special edition is just another turd they tryed to sell like the remastered star wars movies in the 1997-8 time period. Takes all the nostalgia and life away from the old game and replaces it with crappy windows 95 freindly graphics. Like those are anything nice to look at. I will have to say this is around the time Lucas Arts games began to decline

Fact is Steam needs to include collectors Cd-rom just like GOG already does for the same price.

Oh, opinions can be utterly wrong if they're not based on the right/correct information. :)

In my opinion the music is better and so are the graphic textures of the 98 version.
How is my opinion wrong?

The resolution part of your OP is wrong. They both play at 640x480.

As for low res textures vs gouraud shading, and repetitive canned Star Wars music vs an original score that adjusts dynamicly to gameplay; you're right, that's just opinion.

The Midi music made the collector's edition, I am hoping steam will do the right thing and put the 95' Collector's edition up.

For me I like the '98 version for the engine sounds. nothing like hearing the whine of your TIE engine as you rip around space blowing up rebels and pirates!

The "high quality music" cuts in and out constantly for me. Also, I don't understand what they did to the voices - I never played the 1998 version before, but good god they sure did muffle the voices.

The sound quality of the voices had to be lowered to make room for the CD audio.

The music changes in response to in-game events. For example, the destruction of major craft, the entry of capital ships, completion of mission goals etc. It's no wonder that a mission starting with one long dogfight and no mission events doesn't give the best impression of its capabilities.

Also the MIDI sounds off.

Anyway this thread is is actully not very helpfull to the TIE Fighter fans, or anyone who purchased this on Steam. If you say 'hey 1998 version is da best because X wings have drawings on them' Then Steam will not add the collectors CD to this game pack. You think 1998 Versions great, that is awsome and your oppinion; Even though it is an odd Opinion as 98 edition is actual po-op.

GOG sells all 3 versions in their pack for the same price, so in order for people to get their moneys worth Steam needs to add Collectors CD to this and X-wing. Otherwise its all pointless to talk about because if you bought it here on steam , you got ripped off since you could have had the real complete game from GOG, including the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ 98 edition.

A thread saying 98 edition is all that is needed is telling Steam that they do not need to add
the most popular version to a game sold soley for nostalgia. Which Gog allready does.

Personally if i wanted to spend time going down memory lane i would load up the original 3.5 floppy 1994 version over the 98 edition. Only reason to Play TIE fighter is memorys, not to experience the cutting edge graphics paintjob that looks like crap anyway; from a time when Han did not shoot first and G. Lucas began to lose his mind remastering everything in special editions.

Originals Please.

Complete speculation as has been noted elsewhere on this forum. Some folks, including myself, imagine that GOG has some exclusivity rights in their dealings with Disney. They had these games on GOG for about 6 months before they showed up here, and the day they showed up on here, GOG released the Collector's CD with their package advertising it as "exclusive".

I think it will come to this Steam version, but not before whatever exclusivity deal with GOG dries up. 3-6 months?

So no point to buy it on steam it is that simple. Yet. Anyway I have loaded up the original (Collectors CD-rom, of course) in dosbox and decided to start a campaing seeing these ads. Quite fun. Good memorys from almost 20 years ago, wow time flys.
