STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter Special Edition

STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter Special Edition

Running Super Choppy/ Poorly
Is anybody else having issues with the game running incredibly choppy? It feels like I'm watching a slideshow as the animations take forever and go frame by frame. If I open the esc options menu, there is a long delay after I press something until it executes.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

If I run the game in DOS mode, it runs perfectly, so it's only the Special Edition that runs poorly.

Same thing here. The DOS version is fine, but not the Special Edition version. My mouse, other the other hand, will move normally. I tried to muscle through it and start the Training Simulator, but it crashed. Any ideas?

two ideas come to mind:
1: are you, by any chance, running two instances of the game (nearly impossible but...)
2: are you running it under the 3d hardware option instead of software?

Doesn't seem I'm running two instances of the game. I'm not entirely sure how I'd tell if it's running in 3D hardware option instead of software. Is that the resolution selection in which one of the options has "3D hardware" at the end? If so, I've tried all of the other options as well, to no avail...
Which version of Windows are you running?

What video card(s) do you have?

With "Tie Fighter" I was getting less than 1 frame per second in enhanced mode, but switched to DOS mode and found the game ran fine. Then I switched back to enhanced mode and found it ran at the proper speed.

The game is still buggy though. X-Wing Alliance runs okay, but I have had one crash to desktop.

The '95 Collector's CD-rom over on GOG runs on DOS,
so it should work just as well as the '94 version.
So that's always an option if you can bear the lesser textures compared to the '98 version.

This really needs to be corrected

We're not even sure what's causing it. You, PhilBreeden, and the OP, all need to post your system specs, as well as your windows and gpu driver versions. Without some basic info to work with, any proposed solutions would just be shots in the dark.

EDIT: Although if you want to try a shot in the dark, try going into the game's folder and renaming ddraw.dll to something else, or just deleting it.

Nvidia Driver 347.88
Nvidia GTX 780M

I'll try the ddraw.dll deletion

EDIT: deletion of ddraw.dll fixed all my problems, thanks for the tip.

Not sure what the proper format would be, so that's what I got. I tried the deletion method but that resulted in my game giving me a "game could not start" error whenever I try to boot it up. Good to know it's working for some people, though.

Edit: Woops, I accidentally did the deletion method on my copy of X-Wing, causing problems with X-Wing. Trying it on TIE fighter worked like a charm! Thank you so much! If you have any tips for fixing X-Wing, though, which is suffering the exact same problem, that would be much obliged. Deleting ddraw.dll caused the game failing to start error, I'm afraid.

I'm having the same problem. I know it isn't my computer because I have the GOG version and that runs perfect

I have this exact same problem as well. Except in my game it will run smoothly then it will get choppy all of a sudden then it will run smoothly again. It gets quiet annoying. And I have the regular windows cursor along with the in game cursor.

@darth bushy hair:
just set copatibility mode to xp or 7. Worked for me :)
Stormtrooper8629 Dec 23, 2015 @ 6:59am
Thanks! Ill try that then!
Update: Runs perfectly well no problems. The only problem I do have is the double cursor still but I can live with that!
