Crashing to desktop
I keep crashing to desktop whenever I try to begin a mission, or when trying to begin the training simulator. What can I do for this? The game is completely unplayable. Does anyone else have this issue?

Yes, you cannot play in hardware mode without hexing the .exe

Ya, if you try to use the 3D hardware in options it crashes.

Fixed it for me.

If you want to play with 3D acceleration enabled and have NVIDIA card, here is what you need to do:

Go to your Nvidia Control Panel

-Select 'Manage 3D settings'
-Select Tie95.exe or X-wing95.exe as a program to customize
-Change following values from the list:
- Anisotropic filtering to off
- Vertical sync to on
- Triple buffering to on

Worked great for all of us with GOG version of the game.

ATI fix:

Thanks to Cyphox and vashren from XWA forum, I got 3D Acceleration working on my ATI R9 270 card :D

I will mention from the start that hex editing the exe file didn't work for me as the game crashed while loading a mission.
So I created an ISO file as Cyphox described.

As already mentioned by shanafin a few post above, driver compatibility was broken when Catalyst 13.11 was released. So the solution provided by vashren was to extract the old dll files from Catalyst 13.1 (when 3D was working) and copy them in the TIE installation folder, therefore bypassing the dll files from Windows folder.
He made an excellent guide: http://www.xwaupgrade.com/phpBB3008/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=11187

Although the fix was for X-Wing Alliance, it works with Tie Fighter 95. All these games are basically based on similar engines.

He suggested that a similar approach should be done for NVIDIA. I am sure that here on GOG, the community will find the solution.

For those who want the quick method, I have uploaded the dll files in an archive on WeTransfer: http://we.tl/7Xy13RTyH4

NVIDIA fix is my own experimentation with TIE Fighter and X-wing so I can confirm it works. ATI fix I just copy pasted from the respective thread on GOG and can't confirm if it works. This fix should be credited to the original author: Pvt_Bloody.

If there are any snags, I'd be happy to offer further help. Enjoy hunting rebel scum in this great classic game. ;)

TBH i couldnt get that simple method to work on the GoG version of tie fighter (1998), I had to D/L the hexed tie95.exe on the GoG forum to get Hardware mode to work properly.
Tried altering the NVIDIA settings for this one but same result as with my laptop, black screen and tie95.exe has stopped responding

Hmm. Could be driver issue. This game seems to not like drivers past 344.xx version, although some people have reported it working with certain 347.xx versions.

GOG version won't work without changing some hex values yourself or getting already modified tie95.exe file, because they've disabled 3D acceleration by changing one value.

I'm pretty sure Steam version is untouched in this regard. I'm not sure if they've included compatibility fix (doubt it) so I'll post a link for you to try if so inclined. It might solve your problem.

Second link might help you as well since this is what GOG did with their version.
