just fly fast and turn when it gets close, then keep it in front of you by turning with it. Keep turning and it will blow up itself after a while or shoot it.

Switching to single fire mode might also help you shoot it.

Shooting it down is probably most reliable. You'll get a prompt when one is fired at you, and spacebar by default targets it. Just keep shooting at it with single fire lasers till its destroyed. Otherwise when its coming at you fly perpendicular to it (so its dot is on the very edge of either your forward or rear radar), then fly towards it once it passes so it can't turn towards you. I think they burn out after 30 seconds. You might be able to assign your wingmen to target it too, not sure how well it works though.
Why single fire...quad lasers have a way higher chance to hit stuff headed directly towards you...mainly since the targeting computer will find a firing solution and u just click the trigger when u get the green beep..

They're fairly easy to shoot down once you get the hang of it. Otherwise, the above comment about keeping it 90 degrees or on the edge of your radar displays. Just keep it in that part of the radar and it won't reach you.

The type of missile is also important. If a Mag Pulse is flying at me I'll just take the hit if I am busy with other stuff. Having to recharge my lasers is often less of a price then losing my traget in a dogfight.

However if it is an advanced missile I will do everything in my power to deal with it. Those things are not only fast, but they can one shot all but the strongest craft (I think the Defender, Gun Boat, and Missile Boat are the only ones that can take even ONE advanced missile). I try to fly like stated above if the missile is close. Normally I never get a chance to shoot the missile before the timer runs out. However if I am lucky I can try to shoot it as it is coming towards me.

Normal missiles are a bit of a grey area. If I have full shields and am not otherwise under threat, I might choose to just take the hit. Otherwise I would deal with them like the advanced missile, just without as much worrying since they are much slower.

I don't think anything else ever gets shot at you, but they would be too slow to really even catch you.
