What are the chances the steam deck will be able to run fm26 smoothly?

It will run fine... resolution is your barrier, smaller text may have legibility difficulties at 800p. Ill be playing it on a legion go 2 which will be more suitable based on screen size and resolution however the steam decks track pads are far more suitable for mouse gameplay so you should have a good time. May only need to reduce graphics settings for 3D match.
the steam deck exceeds the minimum system requirements, so im rather hopeful that it will run oke.
im not entirely certain how much controller support there will be, but like the first answer here said, the trackpads should make it quite playable.
depending on your eyesight you may have to use the magnifying tool a bit for some of the smaller text though (by default it is steam + left bumper button for most games, but you can change it).

in the end how "playable" it will be depends on your own expectations though. i have seen some people on the steam forums say that anything except max settings and 110 fps is "unplayable" for example.
in the end it is a steam deck and i dont think that it matches the recommended requirements, so don't expect it to run the matches with everything set to max.
Hopefully it will run, still waiting for official confirmation on this.

Sometimes it's not a matter of requirements, all it takes is for the text to a be a bit small for it to be "unplayable", bad optimization or some weird requirement like EA anti cheat for example.
I have a feeling it won't be a good experience. Small text, everything to squashed together making it easier to misclick, and usually verified games that come out these days aren't running that well. Add the anti-cheat Denuvo on top of these reasons and I'd say we're very hopeful to believe it'll run fine altogether.

I own a 1 TB OLED so of course I wish it would be great. In the past I played a lot of FM on PSP and tablet. I'm buying a gaming laptop to have the best FM experience going forward.

I'll be waiting for feedback from others or some official feedback before purchasing it. Can only play on the steam deck these days.

Ive had zero issues running 23/24, it's a far better experience than the switch version for example, text is fine and not cramped at all. But we can't know for sure with the whole new UI.

Have to wonder though, why a game like FM would need a anti cheat.
