It worked fine for me except I couldn't load my saves because I was using a new profile. That is really easy to fix though.
Change the name of the folder: C:\Documents and settings\YourWindowsUsername\AppData\Local\Monte Cristo\Cities XL\live\YourCitiesXLUsername\
to "citiesxl".
Thanks, it worked for me.
How did it work? To me it's still giving me "You must login online to activate an account."
I tried to click 'Create your account' and 'Connection' but nothing works.
I bought into the original game because of the ability to connect to other community members worlds and trade. The developer had big plans for the game and I was paying a subscription per month for server access (can't remember how much it was now, but a figure of £11 seems to pop into my head). Every month new items were promised for being a subscriber (rather than just playing the single player part of the game). Again, big promises were made that a lot more original content was going to be added.
Then, after about a year post release, the servers closed down; the developer saying that there wasn't enough community members paying into the subscription, so it wasn't worth keeping it open. I think the original developer then went bankrupt and the franchise was sold off to Focus Home International; who then cashed in by re releasing the original game as a limited edition version that included most of the content that was part of the subscription model. They then re released it in various iterations on Steam. I ended up buying all of the ones (apart from the original regular edition which I already had as a hard copy version); e.g Cities XL Limited Edition, Cities XL 2011, Cities XL: 2012 and Cities XL Platinum Editions, none of which really contained anything new that I remember.
From the copies I have that still work, the game seems exactly the same as my original hard copy that I can no longer play. Someone made a lot of money from this. It's just a shame the game died as it was a decent game with a lot of potential.
The servers closed down years ago. Whether there is a fix that allows you to play the game I really don't know as I ended up moving on to other city building game such as the Tropico franchise, Frostpunk and Cities: Skylines as well as few others with various themes
Use "citiesxl" for both the username and the password fields.
if you had saves from the game the following should fix it (according to TheBirds searck on the Cities XL forums that no longer exist.
i.e.
Change the name of the folder: C:\Documents and settings\YourWindowsUsername\AppData\Local\Monte Cristo\Cities XL\live\YourCitiesXLUsername\
to "citiesxl".
I just tried it again and it definitely does not work now. There must have been a server running at that time that was letting unlimited people login with "citiesxl" that has been shutdown at some point.
Looks like it is dead for real at this point.
