Nope, but you are stuck having to trade a minimum amount of resources with other players when you reach level 12... now I played earlier, i.e. before Steam, and there was no "pay 2 win" after doing that (but everything really takes ages), but it really is annoying that you need to trade for a main quest. That means you're essentially forced to join a guild or find a kind soul who helps you out on that quest.

EDIT: Sorry, that complaint is also invalid. There is a trade office through which you can also play completely alone. Just as I said, everything will take ages.

Theres a Trade bar in the chat, use it to notify other players youre in need of a trade for a qeust. Ppl always helped me when i needed, the community is very supportive.

Around level 30, production queues become tedious. Then comes the "you 'can' pay to speed up, if you don't want to wait a week" notices.

guess will need to save up
I'm at about level 31, the problem i'm having is that i messed up how you do things way long before i got to the level i'm at. Halloween week made things extremely easy, but now i'm struggling lol. It's a 50/50 thing, if you want to be casual - log in once a day and get your rewards you're fine. If you don't want to you don't have to.

Well, you can always move buildings around and if you delete them, you also get licenses back. Just make sure not to delete premium buildings like the improved farm from the Halloween event.

Paying can make progress quicker and/or get rid of some tedious aspects, but it is not a pay to win game. Most of the better buildings can be bought with free resources like coins, and events also have items that are otherwise only available for gems.

There also is a rotation system for guild rewards, so if you are in a guild you get a certain currency you can not get otherwise (unless you are lucky enough to get it on the ingame market). If you do those quests, you can earn many premium buildings, and others through events. It just should be noted that the game becomes time intensive, no matter if you pay or not, if you want the best results (you must always build new wheat fields or refill them - you find the resources for that at daily search quests).

I feel there is no need to ever pay for anything. The premium currency that you need for some quests is earned ingame by leveling up and usually rewards you with as much as you just spent for the quest. When you reach level 50 (not sure if that is raised with the newest patch) you can actually buy premium currency with ingame items. By that point, however, you already have played for some months.

In Anno Online you get unlimited premium currency as well by ingame playing, but that starts earlier (you get uncut rubies that you can convert into rubies at 2:1 or 1:1 rate there with a special building - I save up from levelups to upgrade the building before I ever cut the rubies there). So the both games are really F2P, but require some effort and time.
