machine gunner class and attacking
hey everybody i have a few questions that im kind of confused about, i enjoy playing the machinegunner class but i find it hard to be on the attacking team team as a machine gunner. Should i be actively in the capzones with my teamates or staying back a little bit and offering support as everyone else advances? i have about 90 hours logged in the game and i still consider myself a newb, but i just want some of your guys' insight onto what the proper thing to do for my team would be?

Most of the time I sit back and provide covering fire

Depends on the map and the specific situation. Attacking as a machinegunner is generally a lot harder than defending, same goes for most classes, but for MG this is partiuclarly true.

Suppressing fire is key when playing MG on offense though. Not suppressing the enemy is the flaw I see most commonly on my team when attacking. Try to identify enemy posistions/strongpoints, and then start firing into them REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT YOU CAN SEE THE ENEMY CLEARLY. This will keep the enemy from using the best firing posistions, and allow your teammates to move up without getting picked off before they even get close to the capzone.

Once your team has a cap point, try to move into it quickly to keep the enemy from counter attacking, and also to begin suppressing the next enemy posistion/capzone. You can also try to get into a posistion to sweep enemy approaches into capzones once your team has a foothold. If you're trying to dfend a building from enemy counter attack, best thing to do is go to the ground floor and blaze away from a window, or camp in a corner near a likely entrance and rambo anyone who comes through.

Generally speaking you are providing support fire. You are suppressing the enemies upon which your comrades must then advance and eliminate. Find a spot, set up and fire away at defenders. This can be very challenging because they're already set up, but still it is your job.

Even if you accompany y the assault team, you should be seeking out a place to deploy and provide cover to the next forward area.

Alternately, you can be effective by flanking and trying to set up defilade fire on the defenders as they reinforce their main line of resistance.

The German squad was centered around the LMG, but their tactics work well in this game regardless of the team, so this video can give you an idea:
