RS2 was quite ambitious compared to RO2; its not simply a reskin.
It's going to be dead in a year, it already took a huge hit the past 2 years.
Thank God for Post Scriptum because taking this game to a fake 1983 Cold War scenario is the dumbest idea they could have done. It's like they're trying to win over the Call of Duty fans.
Frankly, If they just remade RO2 in RS2's engine and then slapped "RO3" on it I would have been much happier. I would have bought it for sure. But it probably would not have made them a bunch of money like RS2 did.
It sucks, but it's the cold reality. If TWI didn't do stuff like this, they simply wouldn't exist.
But serious, get RS2 for the Winter War mod. Huge step back from the giant map pool that RO2 has, but it's RO2's gameplay with TWI's latest build of UE3. That means better framerate, better sound quality, better particles, better textures, less hitching, better overhead map, radiomen. All of the good changes without the "deathmatch feel" of RS2.

Pay attention to this, I think it's going to be awesome.
That being said, RO2 is not "abandoned"; development on it has just been fully completed, and like basically every other game before it, it will continue to exist as it is as long as people still play it. RO2 released 8 or 9 years ago and had a full-fledged expansion and several content updates afterwards. It's no longer profitable to keep updating it, so the company has moved on to developing other things. That's how product development works. RS2 is also not being "dropped", it's content roadmap is just ending. Servers will still be hosted for years to come, so the game is not going anywhere. Again, companies can not just endlessly provide content updates to products that are not longer generating revenue.
BTW there are still those of us that play Mare Nostrum mod from RO series, support dropped before RO2 was even released.
Sure, most of the games are populated by bots at the moment, but rumors are that it's fun nonetheless.
