If you're buying old games, the store that specializes in old games is the best place to get them.
DraFi above:
There are 2 CD versions, one is DOS the other Windows, they have some slight differences between them.
Anyone else that doesn't get it, these are the 3 versions of X-Wing:
1. 1993 DOS Floppy disk http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-wars-x-wing (including same year 1993 floppy disk version expansions in this amd GOG release)
2. 1994 DOS CD "Collector's Edition" http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-wars-x-wing-collectors-cd-rom (Steam doesn't have this version.)
3. 1998 Win 9x CD "Collector's Series" http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/star-wars-x-wing-collector-series
See Moby pages for more info on each version, or GOG forums.
So the big question is. What am I really missing from the 94 DOS CD version and why is the Win 9x version inferior?
The main difference is that the 94 DOS CD versions of both X-Wing and Tie Fighter uses iMuse for the sound.
iMuse is really cool as it changes the music to fit with what is going on in your game, this might not sound like much but it makes a big difference to the immersion, I hated the music for the 98 versions as you end up with the cool Star Wars space battle music when you are just flying around scanning cargo or some other routine job and it just keeps playing and playing and playing where as with iMuse you don't get this, when you are doing something 'routine' you get more peaceful music and then as soon as something exciting happens like an enemy capital ship turning up the epic music kicks in.
Again, this might not sound like much of a difference but from my personal experience it made a big difference to my enjoyment of the game.
1) Does this game play on widescreens (16:9), or does it still revert to regular 4:9 format? (Does the gog version have the same limitation?)
2) is there mod support that allows higher-res textures in game?
any help is appreciated, debating on the versions now.....
