The store page for both the Tie Fighter and X-Wing Special Editions clearly states they are the 1994 (non-Collector's Edition) versions. I question Disney's timing in releasing the Collector's Edition upgrade for GOG on the same day Steam debuts the inferior versions, yet both stores offer the games for the same base price.

This is more Disney's doing, but the CD-ROM exclusivity issue for GOG leaves a bad taste in my mouth, especially for a twenty-one year old game that should have been the most up-to-date version across the board, regardless of seller.
Actually the Collector's CD-ROM edition being discussed came out in 1995. The Collector Series version being sold here came in 1998, but IMO isn't as good as the older one. So technically Steam is selling the most up to date version. Just not the best one.

If you're buying old games, the store that specializes in old games is the best place to get them.

I just tried it. If you select Special Edition it will ask for a Joystick you can't skip it. If you choose Classic it works. It works with KB/M controls.

Correct, the original DOS version has KB/M support, but not the speech, new cutscenes or the higher resolution of the 1995 version.

nt as in "no text", not "no thanks". Regardless of which versions you play, Tie Fighter and X-Wing are still great games. Although I do recommend the GOG versions over these.

well glad I didn't buy it here because no one even though the video on Steam shows the "extra" little things and high resolutions that of the Collectors Edition. If that was the case then refund for those who bought it here if it's not.

I just hooked my PS4 controller on my PC. Now I can select Special Edition. The controller works really well as a makeshift joystick. Now it has proper 3D graphics and better sound even with speech. So isn't this the CD Rom Version?

You think this is some kind of mystery? These games/editions came out 20 years ago.

DraFi above:
There are 2 CD versions, one is DOS the other Windows, they have some slight differences between them.

Anyone else that doesn't get it, these are the 3 versions of X-Wing:
1. 1993 DOS Floppy disk http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-wars-x-wing (including same year 1993 floppy disk version expansions in this amd GOG release)

2. 1994 DOS CD "Collector's Edition" http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-wars-x-wing-collectors-cd-rom (Steam doesn't have this version.)

3. 1998 Win 9x CD "Collector's Series" http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/star-wars-x-wing-collector-series

See Moby pages for more info on each version, or GOG forums.

Ok I checked the Moby pages and I'm still a bit confused what the fuss is about. The Special Edition is the Win 9x CD Collectors Series version by Totally Games (as confirmed when I start the game). Moby Page says it contains the Collectors Edition CD. When I check what the DOS CD Version includes it says it includes improved 3D graphics, better sound additional missions and the B-Wing. I don't know about the missions because I just started it but the enhancements and the B-Wing are clearly in it.

So the big question is. What am I really missing from the 94 DOS CD version and why is the Win 9x version inferior?

You are missing the iMuse sound system, and the ability to run the game without a joystick plugged in first. The latter imo, being the only reason Disney bothered to re-publish more than the most recent 1998 version anyway.

For X-Wing CD Collectors version contains a worse iMuse system than the floppy version, though it does contains other large enhancements. For TIE Fighter The collectors Edition is better in every way. It's achame they aren't on Steam, but supporting gog is always a good thing.

Even better if this series got the same treatment as did Homeworld and it's sequel. Perhaps if the sales on Steam and GOG are good, it might happen.

The main difference is that the 94 DOS CD versions of both X-Wing and Tie Fighter uses iMuse for the sound.

iMuse is really cool as it changes the music to fit with what is going on in your game, this might not sound like much but it makes a big difference to the immersion, I hated the music for the 98 versions as you end up with the cool Star Wars space battle music when you are just flying around scanning cargo or some other routine job and it just keeps playing and playing and playing where as with iMuse you don't get this, when you are doing something 'routine' you get more peaceful music and then as soon as something exciting happens like an enemy capital ship turning up the epic music kicks in.

Again, this might not sound like much of a difference but from my personal experience it made a big difference to my enjoyment of the game.

Had a few questions:

1) Does this game play on widescreens (16:9), or does it still revert to regular 4:9 format? (Does the gog version have the same limitation?)
2) is there mod support that allows higher-res textures in game?

any help is appreciated, debating on the versions now.....

1. 4:3, yes
2. no
