So I have looked at guides, videos etc and I still can't get passed this mission. I can clear out the initial wave of ties, and scan all the cargo and freighters. But once the star destroyer shows up I just can't take out the ties and bombers out fast enough and then I lose the mission from everything getting taken out.

Took me a few times also. Once the Star Destroyer comes out of Hyperspace...head straight for it. Take out the bombers using torpedoes then take out the tie fighters. Stay somewhat close to the Star Destroyer and keep taking out wave after wave..eventually no more will launch. Then you can take everything else out after the freighters have completed their mission.

Yeah keep in between the ISD and the freighters and don't let any bombers or Ties through. Crippling bombers will buy you time as they limp back to their star destroyer which only has a fixed number of bombers and ties in it's hangar. Once you stripped it from all of them you might even consider taking out the star destroyer itself. Start with the shield generators on top of the bridge. Takes quite a while and several hit and run maneuvers tho.
