STAR WARS™: X-Wing Special Edition

STAR WARS™: X-Wing Special Edition

Joystick recommendations
Hi I just got the x-wing games but I am holding off playing them until I get a joystick. I was intending to get a joystick anyway but I'm going to do so asap now. (like tomorrow if I can). I don't have a huge budget but what are some of the things I should look out for?

cheers in advance.

If I were you, I'd do a Google search on this topic.

I actually am getting a joystick for this game and another and I have been doing alot of research and I personally am going with the cheap but reliable Logitech 3d pro alot of people use it and love it, so that's what I am using.
cheers. I think I saw one at the store when I went in the other day. I might get it if I have a chance tomorrow.

Yeah I think I got the one you are talking about a few days ago. It works fairly with X-Wing, and TIE Fighter (only tired those two so far). The only real issues are the lack of space at my desk (not really an issue with the joystick, just my clutter desk), and the defalut bindings aren't very good.
Lol I'll certainly have issues with clutter. I know I'll find a way to fit it all in. Guess that's all part of the fun.

It is hard to find those joysticks nowadays. I'm still using a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 that I bought back in the early 2000's

I've actually used 2 joysticks with this game, and used 2 different versions of the game. One is a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, the other is a Saitek X52 HOTAS.

If you're playing the 1994 original or 1995 collector's CD editions, any stick with at least 2 buttons will work. The trigger will generally be recognized as button 1 (fire) and button 2 (select target/roll). If you play the 1998 version (I like this one), you can assign commands to as many buttons as you want.

However, there is a caveat with the x52. There is a thumb wheel on the stick which acts as a "mode" selector. This keeps you from programming the buttons or hat switches because by default, each mode is read by the computer as a button being held down. So in order to use the X52, YOU MUST INSTALL THE DRIVER SOFTWARE!!! Fortunately, the X52 software is readily available from the Logitech website. Install that, and you're good to go.

While tedious to program, having the quick throttle commands, shield alignment, weapons select. and target selectors under my fingertips helps me out in a firefight.

How can we change configurations with other than DOSBox? There used to be a way to configure during the game. Through DOSBox, I would configure my game pad but the game's default settings would be on there too.

You can use the Logitech profiler to configure all the buttons (if you're using a Logitech stick).
