Reducing detail doesn't help in the Special Edition. The key is keeping max speed.
Try this:
T3M14 Death Star Trench Run (X-Wing): Show the Alliance that their confidence in your abilities is well founded! Take on the Death Star and win! Why they just sent you out in one fighter I don’t know; maybe the others were lost in the approach. Anyway, take out the three TIEs approaching you and then recharge your shields. Follow the Nav buoys if you get disoriented, but the trench should be easy to find. If you move quickly enough, the TIE Advanced won’t have a chance to get close enough to harm you. Once you dip into the trench, you speed will get tripled! There are far more objects and obstacles in here than I remember from the movie, but press on, and shoot the turbolasers before they shoot you. You can also shoot obstacles. In XWFD you can eliminate most obstacles by setting Death Star detail to zero in your in-flight options, however this won’t work in Xwing95. Your targeting display will change to let you know how far away the exhaust port is. Remember to switch to torpedoes in time! I find the trench portion the easiest when I am at the very top of the trench with ELS set to normal shields and lasers redirected to engines. Speed is still boosted, and laser fire from the surface and within the trench is very minimal. However, whenever an object shows up at the top, pull up and over it, then be sure to duck down again, or you’ll slow down too much. You may wish to manually slow down when you are in range of the exhaust port. When you get a hit, pull up to avoid smashing into the wall. Congratulations! You have beaten the original X-Wing game! You’ll be taken home to receive another medal from Mon Mothma. Is she winking at you because she knows you’re good, or because she has a thing for you? The Alliance has won...for now.
I also prefer to stay at the upper portion of the trench and depending on how much shooting and transferring to shields you plan to do, you can have lasers at increased or max and shield recharge on normal.
As far as strats go, I usually dispose of the annoying set of TIE's in the beginning, go for trench and as soon as my shields are drained fly out of the trench, restore all energy to weapons and shields and continue on.
Somehow cheesing the mission is the only way that works for me.
