Are there difficulty settings like in TIE Fighter? This game is quite challenging

No, the game is just one difficulty, with the exception of a small handful of missions in the Collector's CD-ROM and Special Editions. (I question whether the "easy" missions are any easier.) You also can't save your pilot in-game, like in TIE Fighter, so if you die or are captured, you lose rank, but not game progression. It's indeed a challenge, though many missions have tricks or patterns.

Just save a copy of your pilot file to the desktop after each mission or two, just in case you die or get captured. This is the thing that annoys me about X-Wing, especially when you destroy a Gunboat or transport and it does a 180 and it kills you.
