How to run special edition/remastered with only keyboard and mouse

I bought this specifically to play the special edition/remastered versions but they tell me I NEED a keyboard conected before I can even start the game
I WAS told that there was keyboard and mouse support as well as the possibility of rebinding keys

how do I start without a joystick?
or should I just go ahead and ask for a refund?

Only the DOS versions supported mouse/keyboard.
Only way to use keyboard/mouse is to either use some virtual joystick program, or to replace the ddraw.dll with the one from here (see also other guides/threads, though they are more about the graphics improvements): https://github.com/rdoeffinger/xwa_ddraw_d3d11/releases

It's unfortunate, but that's the way it is. I don't have a working modern joystick currently, but from using a joystick back in the day, and also mouse in the DOS version and a gamepad in both, the joystick is really the only way to really enjoy the game.

are there any games like these that support mouse and keyboard?
due to the country I live and my own finances I just cant afford to get a flight stick for a minority of games; but I am itching for some old style flight sims, specially stuff in depth as these games

Try Tachyon: The Fringe. It's another old game, but it holds up, and it's a space sim with mouse control as an option. I don't recall too much trouble with the mouse. http://store.steampowered.com/app/32760/

my neighbor and i both used that joystick on this same game. was the best joystick ive used still to this day. which is frightening all things considered.
