Actually you can just you're one of the many few that can not compare much when it comes to system components.
I have two custom built PC's (that I built) and I've also bought consoles in the last year or two... I know it's shocking to the people that can't seem to fathom that power doesn't always = fun, but their are quite a few games PC's dont have that I enjoy even though their not as pretty as new shiny PC games. I don't understand people like you who seem to have this ax to grind against people who prefer to do their hobby differently than you.
But my question is why ?
MM
While everyone who builds their own pc knows that it should be the other way around.:
When you are on a budget, you first save money on performance, then on ergonomics, and almost never on quality.
I would never go the prebuild route, because someone who has always build their own, knows that even the choice of coolingpaste for the cpucooler will make a huge difference. And we are talking about 5 or 6 dollar/euro here.
But I don't think the OP has to worry about steam being steamOS only. There are some big titles that are crossplatform, but most games rely on directX, which is Windows only. ( yeah Wine does some directX9, but still).
Not even 1 percent of tthe Steam customers will buy a steam machine. When their core business is selling software/games, they can't afford going steamOS-only for the obvious reasons.
Some people say they just do it to break into the console market... Really? People who buy consoles are people who can't afford a gaming system because it costs alot and it needs replacement every 2-3 years when some part dies or new gaming engines come along, unlike console. With any computer you can have a controller and use it as a console while sitting in your sofa gaming on your TV... If Steam wanted to enter the console market they already did that with the Steam OS, not by creating these highly overpriced machines. Gamers nowadays aren't just gamers, we are people that know how to build a PC and the ones who don't, let other people do it for them via hardware forums, people with reputation who love to help for no money. This will bankrupt VALVe.
