Buy Alienware Alpha - same system, but with Windows 10 and Alienware Hivemind UI.

You can install Windows on the Steam Machine just the same way you would with a regular PC. You need a bootable Windows flash drive or an external DVD drive to use a disc installer.

My friend is probably going to get the Alienware Steam machine i3 for Christmas. I told him I'd be able to install Windows 7 on there for him and upgrade it to Windows 10. Would I be able to use the same drivers from the Alpha on the Steam OS version? Aside from controller, OS, and varying CPUs, is the hardware of the two versions any different from each other?

Edit: Also, would you happen to know the RAM speed of the i3 version?

They are almost identical in hardware. Either OS will work on either box. You can dual-boot if you want as well. Note that the Alpha comes with Windows and The Steam Machine comes with Steam OS. If you want both OS's, I would advise the Alpha, so you dont have to purchase an extra license of Windows. Steam OS is free and can be installed on any PC.

The i3 comes with either 4 or 8 gigs of RAM.

The i3 comes with either 4 or 8 gigs of RAM.

According to the Alienware homepage it is 1.600MHz DDR3 RAM.

Can anyone help me "enable SteamOS to boot into GNOME via LightDM login to get started"? I've been searching, but havent had any luck.

I know it's probably too late tell you this now but make sure that the steam machine you're installing windows 7 is not configured with skylake model processors. Windows 7 is difficult to install on systems that use those cpu's and they don't officially support the operating system either.

Did you just install Windows 10 from the browser while in desktop mode? I have been successfully able to duel boot from a flash drive, but want to install windows onto the machine and get rid of SteamOS (Linux)

I tried running it from an external drive. Couldnt figure it out. So I formatted the C drive with windows 10. I dont use linux at all and I can still use the steam big picture. I ave access to all of my games now

By formatting the C drive, you mean installing windows from the SteamOS desktop mode?
