Apple TV + Xbox Wireless Controller: View button opens steam overlay instead of being forwarded to the game
I'm not entirely sure when that changed, but recently it seems pushing the "View Button" on the Xbox Wireless controller[support.xbox.com] no longer forwards this event to the game but instead now opens a steamlink overlay(?) with options like "Return to game", etc.

My setup is Steamlink 1.2.0 on an Apple TV with the controller paired to it using Bluetooth. I've reinstalled Steamlink to be sure this isn't just a configuration issue. The "View button" is used at least in Witcher 3 to open up the in-game main menu, so that's inaccessible to me at the moment. Any idea what's going on?

Having this same issue. I did find out that the View Button + B seems to be registering as that button - it at least brings up the map in Elden Ring for me.

Jackpot! I've tried this combo a few times over the last few weeks and it just didn't seem to work for me. After reading your message, I went back to try it again and sure enough, it still didn't work. Out of frustration, I started smashing the two in Fallen Order when suddenly, the game's map popped up on my screen. So there's something to this and after some quick trial and error, I figure out "the trick".

The two buttons pushed together as if it is a key combo won't work. Instead, the View button needs to be quickly pressed, and and THEN the B button needs to be tapped right after that. Once I figured out the timing (and mentally saying "tap, tap"), I've been able to get it to work in both Fallen Order and Cult of the Lamb just fine.

Maybe this is documented somewhere, but I haven't seen it. Really annoying it took this long to figure out, but damn happy to get back to playing.

Same issue, Apple TV Steamlink "View button" not recognised. Originally working correctly.
Game "The council" also thinks the controller is a playstation controller via steam link, but not when the gamepad is connected directly to the host stream pc

I am also seeing this, only on my Xbox controller, Switch Pro and 8BitDo Ultimate not doing this.

Dealing with this exact same issue. Any game that requires or uses the "View" button, also called "Select" in some games, does not register the press in-game. However, the button still works when long pressed or double pressed to trigger Steam Link functionality, and registers a press in the controller configuration/test screen. Any functionality within a game tied to that button is inaccessible, making some games unplayable.

I've tried completely disabling the overlay in the Steam Link settings, and while the overlay no longer pops up, the button itself is still not registered in any game. An additional bug is that Steam Link allows me to set the Guide button to the overlay, however it seems tvOS hijacks that button to mirror functions of the remote's home button.

Apple TV 4K (2021, 32GB)
tvOS 16.2 (20K362)
Steam Link 1.2.0
Xbox Elite Controller Series 2

Games such as Star Wars: Jedi Outcast (to access the map), Cult of the Lamb (access inventory and complete the intro tutorial), In Sound Mind (listen to audio recordings), etc are examples of where this functionality is required to either progress at all or access important features.

Interesting. Sounds like Dead key[en.wikipedia.org] behaviour. I noticed the small delay between pressing the View button and the steam overlay opening. Makes sense now, seeing that it seems to wait for an optional secondary button press. I just tested with Witcher and it indeed works. Thanks to you two. Would still be interesting to know if that's intentional.

What I have found is (with both an 8BitDo Pro 2 mapped as an XBox controller, and a DualShock 4)...

  • Select then A/X = in-game Start behavior
  • Select then B/Circle = in-game Select behavior
  • Select then Y/Triangle = Screenshot

You have to get the timing right. Took me a few tries, but now it is muscle memory.

Pretty silly if you ask me...

Thanks for the super useful suggestions!

Any word from the devs if this will be fixed in a future update?

This also works in Starfield in case anyone is looking.

This works, they should really make a prompt for this when select button is pressed (just like the hold select prompt), or at least mention it in the settings menu or guide
