Steam Link
Black screen on 4k
Hello!

As the title suggests I'm having trouble streaming 4k to my Raspberry Pi via SteamLink. I manage to start steamlink but as soon as i try to connect to my computer, the screen goes black. It works just fine with 1080p but not 4k.

The problem arise when i in the Raspberry Pi change the resolution to 4k. I have tried changing the remote play settings to use 4k, but to no avail. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Yes, it still doesn't work

None of these suggestions work. I'm already using the latest buster version and I don't have an option for full KMS, only fake or legacy. I'm running the raspberry pi via SSD and not SD card, could that have an impact?

Okay, scratch that. By adding dtoverlay=rpivid-v4l2 to /boot/config.txt I can see the top part of the computer screen (basically just the title of whatever Big Screen window I'm in) in the bottom half of the TV. There is also some flashing.

I'm using the 4B 8GB version. I've also in a desperate attempt increased the gpu memory to 2gb, which is probably very overkill but hey might as well try.

So it kind of works now, but not in a really playable state. If I start the remote session in desktop mode i get a connection, but there is some input lag when playing a game. I've checked and it's not wrong at the hosts end. I'm also using a wired connection, so the connection should theoretically be stable (i get 90 mb/s in the network test). But big screen mode still doesn't work.

I also tried setting config_hdmi_boost to 4 in /boot/config.txt, but it doesn't seem to have an impact.

Actually, the connection works with 1.1.89 if using the desktop mode but I still have input lag so the version doesn't seem to be the problem

I was going to try that, when I stumbled upon a new problem that seems to have come out of the blue. All kinds of different colours are flying across the screen and the image is distorted. I have tried resetting the changes I did, but nothing seems to do the trick. The video output of the pi also dies when disconnecting from remote play. Any idea why?

After having the pi off over the night it now "works" again, altough with the same input lag even with the bandwidth limited to 40mb/s. I have a hard time thinking its a temperature issue, since the temperature is stable around 35-50 degrees celsius. I will check and see if the problem occurs again in the evening, too see if it's related to how long the pi has been on or if it's just random

The line is direct. As soon as I start up a game, the latency skyrockets to 200ms

My setup is a 10m cat5e cable going from my router to a switch, that is connected to both the pi and a chromecast. I've tried before to plug it directly into the pi, but no result. My controller is an xbox series s controller plugged in via cable. I also noticed that the acutal input latency is 1ms< the entire time, it's just the display latency that goes up very high making the experience "blocky". Like it works for 2 seconds, stop for 1, then 2 seconds and so forth.

The pi is also having it's nightly hiccup with not displaying the screen properly in 4k so i cant test anything, but I'll play around with the connection to the pi and post my results tomorrow.

the monitor is only 1080p, but i'm trying to get around that by using amd vsr which i honestly have no idea how well it integrates with the steam link. i'll try have the game preset to 4k tomorrow when the pi hopefully works

Tried again even with 4k preset, still not working. Tried overclocking the rpi to see if it had anything with the decoding not being fast enough but didn't make any difference. I guess the only option I have left is getting a new device to host steam link on or just live with 1080p. Might do the latter since being a student is hard lol. Thanks anyway, I appreciate a lot the time you've spent on trying to help me.
Right, so I've been playing around with it a bit again and I've come to realise that it's the h265 decoder that isn't working properly. I tried to use moonlight to stream games, but it had the same problems. But, if I ran moonlight with the -codec h265 options, nothing happened, and if I ran it with the -codec h264 option I got the same result as the steamlink. Altough I still have no idea on how to fix this, atleast I know where it's coming from. After reinstalling the rpi and choosing the optimal settings in config.txt as well as enabling hevc in the steamlink, i now get the problem i got a while back where there is only a portion of the big screen mode showing very zoomed in, in only one part of the screen.
