Aspect Ratio Bug OLD CRT TV (16:9)
Hi! I've got a Raspberry pi 3B hooked to a CRT TV (16/9) with a resolution of 720 x 576 (PAL) via composite output (rca).

The bug that I'm experiencing is that I've got black borders Up and Down of the image, I've suspect that this is because 4/3 CRT TVs got the same resolution 720x576 so the TV is identified as a 4/3 ratio device even it is 16/9.

Would be possible to include a "Force Stretch Image" option?
That way the problem will be solved.

Maybe you could include some TV options, like:
-CRT PAL 4/3
-CRT PAL 16/9
-CRT NTSC 4/3
-CRT NTSC 16/9

What makes it frustating is that the Desktop (outside steam) seems to have no margings/black borders at all, I'll try to record a video to illustrate the issue.

To reproduce this bug you could hook a 16/9 Old CRT TV and run some tests on it.

Thanks.

I've been struggling with getting this worked around, too. The overscan options have been slightly helpful in this case. Unfortunately when changing them to remove borders you have to choose to sacrifice access on the desktop for perfect picture, but when done 640x480 works and looks perfectly as if I were using an S-Video cable on an older Nvidia card.

Of course, this isn't taking into account the 16:9 mode for Pi, which seems to be anamorphic like how the Wii or old DVDs would squish a 16:9 image into 4:3, then let the TV do the scaling to make the image come out correctly. Again, I'd suggest poking around the overscan settings and testing what does and doesn't work. In the meantime, I really hope this gets acknowledged as a bug or request that gets put in for better image scaling support.

Have you tried adding
sdtv_aspect=3
to /boot/config.txt ?
