SOLVED: controller/bluetooth causes massive lags on wifi (Mediapad M3)
Hello,

probably this is a general steam link issue because I read about it already related to steam link. But the only solution that was suggested, was switching from wifi to ethernet. While that may be a solution for the steam link, it's not for an android tablet.

So my setup looks as follow:
- PC connected via ethernet to LAN
- Huawei MediaPad M3 connected via wifi 5GHz to a repeater (very near and strong connection)
- xbox controller connected via BT to the tablet

As soon as I connect my controller via BT and do some input, the steam link app begins to lag as hell (lags from 0.5s to several seconds). Very often even the whole app crashes, because the lag was "too long".
I have updated to beta client some days ago and it stopped. I could play the evening without lags and thought the problem was solved... But now there is the lag again and changing from and to beta back and forth doesn't help at all, so I think I just had random luck before.

Please help. :)

SOLUTION:

"... But fortunately I might have found a fix for the problem. It seems to be a problem of the device itself(probably some more tablets), as it works with my smartphone flawlessly. I did some research and tried to turn off the GPS on the Mediapad M3. It seems like the GPS function affects the WiFi somehow. BUT only when WiFi and BT are communicating simultaneously. WTF, I know, but it seems to work. I will test it further to be sure it's not luck again."

Use a Shield Controller or other controller which uses WiFi direct I.e. does not need dongle

Shield is Nvidias android gaming platform. Xbox controllers are for windows or Xbox. Shield Controllers are for android and windows.

WiFi definitely adds lag compared too Ethernet and Steam Link App simply performs better when nobody else has WiFi devices anywhere near your network/connection.

You could try using Steam Link App with controller using USB cable to compare how using Bluetooth for controller affects your WiFi for Steam Link Apps In Home Streaming stream, if you haven't already.

- xbox controller is for me the best designed controller out there. Also it is from Microsoft for Microsoft (Windows) and that's why I've experienced the best support in Games (they still run on Windows) so far. I think it is also a very common controller, which should be supported anyways.
- BT is working on 2.45GHz I think. So there should not be any interference with the WiFi?
- Thank you for the advice, I'll try the cable option as soon as I can.

Unfortunately the xbox one controller doesn't work on android with the cable out of the box.

I will test it further to be sure it's not luck again.

it's a bit of a gamble. Experienced something similar also on my Huawei Laptop. So you just have to try it out.
