Controller compatibility list
Hello all,

I know that Samsung already has their own list of officially supported controllers that are compatible with the Steam App, which are:

The Steam Controller
Xbox 360 Wireless/Wired
Xbox One Wired
Logitech F510 / F710

However, I was told that it's possible to get other controllers to work, since they aren't able to test every controller that exists. So I'd thought I'd compile a list here to show which controllers are compatible with the app, and which aren't. I'm hoping that others who own different controllers can help contribute to this list as well. My TV model is KU6290, 65-inch.

Works:
AmazonBasics Xbox One controller - Tested by myself. It's not an official first-party controller by Microsoft, but it is officially licensed, so Amazon stuck very closely with Microsoft's specs when making it, so much so that it gets recognized as a regular Xbox One controller. Great wired, cheaper alternative. The Xbox Accessories app tells me that the firmware is 1.1.279.2

Logitech F310 - Tested by myself. I figured that since the F510/F710 are listed as officially compatible controllers, chances are the F310 will work as well. Lo and behold, it does.

Xbox One wireless via 8BitDo receiver - Tested by HandSlander.

Dualshock 4 wireless via 8BitDo receiver - Tested by raFaun

JAMSWALL Wired USB Xbox 360 controller - Tested by myself. I got this off Amazon, and I was actually quite surprised that it worked, since it's a third-party knock-off. I guess the internals are identical enough to the 360 controller that the Steam app recognizes it as one. However, I wouldn't recommend this one, since it feels quite cheap in the hands. But it does work.

PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox One - Tested by myself. This one's another officially licensed controller, so I'm guessing that they stuck very closely to the Microsoft spec. Funny thing is, Steam recognizes it as a Generic Gamepad, rather than an Xbox controller. The Xbox Accessories app tells me that the firmware is 1.1.279.2, which is the same as the AmazonBasics controller.

Doesn't Work:
Gamesir G3W wired PC controller (interestingly enough, the TV does detect input from this controller, but it just jumps all over the place, making it totally unusable)

PowerA Xbox One Wired USB Controller - tested by HandSlander. This is interesting, since it's also an officially licensed controller like the AmazonBasics one.

ZD T Gaming Wired Gamepad - Tested by myself. Same issue as the Gamesir, it just jumps all over, making it unusable.

Xbox One S via bluetooth - tested by HandSlander. Is responsive, but not all buttons work and is temperamental. Works fine with 8bitdo receiver.

PDP Rock Candy Wired Xbox 360 controller - tested by myself. Funnily enough, it works on the menu portion when selecting a PC to connect to and the Steam Link settings, but once you open Steam Big Picture mode, it becomes non-responsive. I was surprised that this one didn't work, since it's officially licensed by Microsoft, while the knock-off JAMSWALL one worked.

PDP Wired Controller for Xbox One - Tested by myself. This one doesn't work at all. No input detected whatsoever. The Xbox Accessories app tells me that the firmware is 1.0.62.0

I think I'm done with my testing, I'll leave the rest to everyone else. I hope that those of you who have other controllers can also test them and report your results, so that other people with Samsung smart TVs can find this resource useful.

Thanks, I will try when I arrive home.

Maybe with the 8bitdo dongle?
I have the same problem
Does it work with the xbox one bluetooth dongle? If I have two different controllers (Both xbox one controllers) will they work both with just one dongle?
Thanks.

Tested the Mayflash Magic-NS adapter with dualshock 4 on Xinput mode, and it doesn't work.

If anyone has it working on any mode, I would apreciate the feedback.

I use the same adapter to use the ps4 controller as XInput on PC and it works flawlessly there.

can anyone provide an update on how to use the 8bitdo wireless adapter with an xbox one wireless controller? Here's what I've tried, and what's working and what is not.
1. Xbox controller connected directly to samsung tv via micro usb cable. WORKS (both tv control and steam link app control)
2. xbox contoller connected to pc via bluetooth and micro usb cable (works)
3. xbox controller connected to pc via 8bitdo adapter (works, although steam shows 2 controllers and xbox 360 and an xbox one. Getting weird double input issues likely related to the 2 detected contollers)
4. xbox controller connected to tv via 8btido adapter (doesn't work, steam link app doesn't recognize a controller)

I've tried updating the firmware on both the xbox one controller and the 8bitdo adapter (v1.28 currently). nothing works. all the reports I'm reading on this page, other steam discussions, reddit, etc, say that it's just "plug and play" after updating firmware. Any help would be much appreciated!

Does the bluetooth stick provided with the steam controller works with XBOX One S Wireless?
Thanks.

When you talk about the Xbox controller connected directly to samsung tv via micro usb cable, are you talking about the new Xbox one S controller with bluetooth? I ask this because in this page: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5613-TADC-2802 it says only the wired version of the Xbox One controller is supported.

By the way, what is yout tv model?

Same problem here. 8bitdo receiver and Xbox One wireless are not shown in Steam Link App on Samsung UE55RU7099.

Can anyone help?

This discussion is about working solutions apart from https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5613-TADC-2802 ...
We know that only the wired solution is supported but we are trying to get other controllers run aswell.

8bit adapter compatibility

Samsung TV model UN50KU6000GXZD works with 8bitdo bluetooth adapter for pairing xbox one x controls? Help me, I need a return before buying the adapter, thanks

How do you pair a bluetooth controller (My case Xbox one) with a stick? I have the Steam Controller stick but each time I connect my Xbox One controller, the Samsung TV takes my controller and not the stick. So it's the same as if I wasn't using it.
Thanks.

With 2019 Samsung Ru7400 series, the Xbox One S controller (model 1708) paired without an external adapter. Everything works except vibration.
It disconnected only one time when there was a random connection problem with steam on pc.
I first paired the controller to pc with usb cable (I don't have bluetooth on pc) and then paired it to tv.

I have a Samsung RU7400 series and paired with the Steam Controller bluetooth stick. But Some controls doesn't work, I think my controller is getting the bluetooth from the Samsung TV instead of the external. How can you manage it?
Lot of thanks!

You used the Xbox controller with Steam's bluetooth stick? I don't think that will work.

As I wrote, I didn't use any bluetooth adapter.
  1. I downloaded the "Xbox Accessories" app from Windows Store on my Windows 10 pc.
  2. I plugged the Xbox controller through usb and used the app to update the controller.
  3. I opened Steam on my pc, changed to Big Picture mode in order for Steam to recognize the controller.
  4. I went to the TV: Settings ->General -> External Device Manager -> Input Device Manager -> Bluetooth Device List . Pushed the pairing button on controller and selected the controller on the list when it appeared (that selection finishes the pairing). If pairing worked, you can navigate TV's menu with the controller.
  5. Opened Steam Link app on TV and everything was working. Except vibration as I mentioned on first post.

I hope that helps.

Do you have to do it each time you turn off/on the tv or just one time?
Thanks :)

No, just once.
