Steam Link

Steam Link

Blurry image quality on Quest 3.
(Steam Link VR)
Playing with Virtual Desktop everything looks crisp and clean. Then I switch to Steam Link and the image quality looks blurry :(
Anyone else having this issue?

Yes, i have de same problem. I cant up the 1024 to 1344 codifi.
Yes. Though, mine is fine right in the very center of the lens. But, the fixed foveated encoding is wrecking the picture quality outside of that tiny window. Using Steam Link makes it look like using fresnel lens again.
My friend was showing me side-by-sides vs Virtual Desktop. They're claim that it is because Steam Link does not use Image sharpening (likely the Quest built in up-scaling that is similar to FSR).

That is not correct. Airlink doesn't use this and you have to enable it manually within VD, it's not automatically enabled. The image is blurry on Steam Link because of the fixed foveated encoding and the limited video encode width.

Valve needs to allow us to turn off the foveated encoding and they need to allow for higher encode widths. Both airlink and VD allow for over 2200 while Steam Link allows for a max of 1344 in the app and 1536 if you change it in the config file.
I have that issue also. Figured I was just seeing things at first. Everything but directly infront of the lens is blurry. I hope this gets fixed because the client is so much better to use then virtual desktop.

Air Link does have a sharpening algorithm known as Link Sharpening which drastically improves image clarity, though it is not upscaling. Meanwhile Virtual Desktop has contrast adaptive sharpening enabled by default, with Snapdragon Game Super Resolution being the optional toggle.

airlink does use it and it even has two modes, normal and quality.

Airlink does have a sharpening filter but it does not use any sort of image upscaling like FSR. That is what I was referring to. The Snapdragon Game Super Resolution upscaling tech is only available on Virtual Desktop and it must be manually enabled.

yes but that is not what I was responding to, you were saying that airlink does not use any sharpening. Whether VD offers better or worse sharpening is another thing.

No I wasn't, that is why I specified better in my response. I was stating that airlink does not use the upscaler.

That was indeed the case for a while but Meta introduced a Super Resolution filter around the middle of 2023, which is an equivalent filter to Virtual Desktop's Super Resolution filter. It can be enabled in the Oculus Debug Tool by setting 'Link Sharpening' to 'Quality'.

That setting has been there since before 2023 and it is not Game Super Resolution, it's just a sharpening filter. Super Resolution is only on Virtual Desktop and it was just added in April 2023. Airlink has not added it yet.

You're wrong. Please see here: https://developer.oculus.com/blog/vr-image-quality-meta-quest-super-resolution/

Two quotes from that article should suffice:

"Today we’re introducing Meta Quest Super Resolution to help you improve the clarity and quality of your VR apps. Super Resolution is a VR-optimized edge-aware scaling and sharpening algorithm built upon Snapdragon Game Super Resolution with Meta Quest-specific performance optimizations developed in collaboration with the Qualcomm Graphics Team."

and

"Super Resolution is available for Meta Quest Link via the Oculus Debug Tool. Super Resolution is enabled when Link Sharpening is set to “Quality”."

Thank you for providing the information to read more on this. I was not aware they had added it onto the link sharpening. They've had that feature in the debug tool for years but it was not tied to Game Super Resolution. Pretty stupid that they added it and didn't call it what it is, Snapdragon Game Super Resolution. But, thanks again. Always good to be up to date on the available information.
