Enable Remote Play in Steam.

Can you provide the version number of SteamVR that you are on. SteamVR 2.1.8 is required for use with Steam Link in VR mode. In addition, as mentioned above, please verify Remote Play is enabled in Steam under the Settings menu. You may need to restart Steam to update SteamVR.

I had no idea remote play needed to be active!

I am running SteamVR 2.1.8 and when I connect to my PC I can see it, click connect, and then it just sits there spinning forever 'connecting to host PC' but never connects.
- I have Remote Play enabled
- Using a Quest 2
- Quest and PC is on the same WiFi
- Using 5ghz which gets a solid 1200mb/s connection via Virtual Desktop.

Let me know if you need logs (and where to find the logs)

[21-12-23 Edit]
I found my issues.
It seems Steam Remote Play has issues with the Tailscale client or Tailscale isolated network I run. Pretty much everything else I use on the internet does not touch my Tailscale network, including Air Link and Virtual Desktop, so that is interesting.
Maybe a clash of ports or addresses?

I had to disconnect my Tailscale network and then restart Steam to get it working.

Me too!

On the Quest 2 side it says "Connecting to host PC is taking longer than usual" infinitely, and on the PC side it says "Awaiting wireless headset" in the SteamVR window.

Notably:
  • Steam Link (Mac/PC) works over this network connection
  • Virtual Desktop works without a hitch
  • The network is dedicated to the Quest
  • No other devices are connected (network limited to 1 connection)
  • 5GHz Wi-Fi 5 Network hardwired to PC
  • 800~ Mbps connection speed in Virtual Desktop
  • OS is Windows 11

  • Nothing notable in the Remote_Connections.txt log file mentioned here

  • VRServer.txt log contains the following ad-infinitum, until SteamVR quits, after Link switches the Quest to VR mode:
[Info] - vrlink: Early TX Failure Streak Hit 201; Aborting and reconnecting.
[Info] - vrlink: SVLDataLinkUDP::Disconnect()
[Info] - vrlink: SVLDataLinkUDP: No QOS service found!

Tx is shorthand for Transmit in wireless networking, so it sounds like there's a transmission failure? But I'm not sure what would cause it, or what other logs to look at. I opened a support ticket on the matter.

I think you should mention Remote Play in the troubleshooting section of the support page. ("Steam Link For Meta Quest" - Troubleshooting - "If you cannot connect make sure"). There were a few settings that I had to tweak, but turning Remote Play on was the last one that I had to find out.

I've tried every single solution that is mentioned in this discussion. Still, steam link cant find my pc. I can confirm that my quest2 and pc are in the same network because i can connect via oculus air link. I have 0 clues why this is not working.

Do you have another device (iPad/iPhone/Android/Apple TV/Mac/PC) you can test Steam Link with? If those can find it, it's down to VR Link. If those can't then it's an issue with remote play entirely.

Steam Link for Meta Quest is an extension of the Steam Link system itself, used for remote play. So it needs to be working first for VR Link to work.

Seeing this set off alarm bells in my head, as I also use Tailscale. I got some help from some friends and found out that the "Use Tailscale subnets" option on the client was causing the issue. I'm not sure why I had it on myself as my PC is already on my subnet. Check to see if that's your issue. 😅
