You can use a laptop yes. I do. But I didn't get that laptop for $50 lol.
HDMI cables aren't really THAT expensive, but it's the same reason some people prefer wireless speaker set ups for their surround sound instead of wired. It's just a wireless option.
Considering my HDTV is on the other side of the room (5m away), went with the HDMI option (got a 10mt long cable, picture is perfect, no lag. cost me around £19 from amazon uk). Been using a Dualshock 4, and everythings perfect. according to inputmapper (free app i use to connect the dualshock), my controller lag is around 1,3ms. unnoticeable
the only issue one might encounter is switching the audio source (from pc speakers to hdtv, and back). Found out that a small app that is sold on steam called DisplayFusion (used to control multiple monitors, very useful app) has the ability, when configured correctly, to switch audio sources when clicken on the small tray icon! Super easy, super useful.
Have my main PC screen mirrored to my HDTV, so all i have to do is turn on my pc, hdtv and dualshock, use the dualshock trackpad to navigate to the displayfusion tray icon, click on it and fire up steam big picture (all this without having to touch the mouse one single time!!!)
