Steam Link
Steam Link? Why not use HDMI?
Why would I get a Steam Link, isn't it just the exact same as plugging my computer into the TV with an HDMI? Why would I spend the money to do what I can already do? (Not bashing it, asking honest question).

I'm pretty sure my wife wouldn't appreciate me running a 50ft HDMI cable from my office down a flight of stairs to my living room. Also I don't really care to drill into the walls to try and feed the cables behind the scenes. I do on the other hand have powerline ethernet by my tv, so I can rely on a strong internet connection for this.

Laptop?

You can use a laptop yes. I do. But I didn't get that laptop for $50 lol.

HDMI cables aren't really THAT expensive, but it's the same reason some people prefer wireless speaker set ups for their surround sound instead of wired. It's just a wireless option.
Because I want my pc in my bedroom, not the living room?
But remember guys, valve recommens you connect the steam link to ethernet, and for those with anything less than perfect internet, that'll probably mean the wifi will lag. A lot. So if your tv is farther than 20 feet away, than that's gonna be a big ass ethernet cord.
:ss13down:Screw the wife and set your own home up how you want, you casual.
just to chime in, was undecided between buying a Steam Link, or going the HDMI route.

Considering my HDTV is on the other side of the room (5m away), went with the HDMI option (got a 10mt long cable, picture is perfect, no lag. cost me around £19 from amazon uk). Been using a Dualshock 4, and everythings perfect. according to inputmapper (free app i use to connect the dualshock), my controller lag is around 1,3ms. unnoticeable

the only issue one might encounter is switching the audio source (from pc speakers to hdtv, and back). Found out that a small app that is sold on steam called DisplayFusion (used to control multiple monitors, very useful app) has the ability, when configured correctly, to switch audio sources when clicken on the small tray icon! Super easy, super useful.

Have my main PC screen mirrored to my HDTV, so all i have to do is turn on my pc, hdtv and dualshock, use the dualshock trackpad to navigate to the displayfusion tray icon, click on it and fire up steam big picture (all this without having to touch the mouse one single time!!!)

The link is to connect your steam to the tv. It's basically a console. So lets say you have a game on pc that doesn't work well on your computer... does this make the game run better on tv?

no. its a streaming device not a console. its like roku or chromecast but for games. all it does is veiw whats already happening on your pc, so if game runs bad on your pc it runs the same on link.
Oh i get it now
