Steam Link
could i throw KODI/XBMC on this thing?
basically i had a second rig that served as a "steambox" and media centre on my living room tv using xbmc. recently the gpu ♥♥♥♥ itself and so rather than get a new one i could just hold out for this if it has the same capabilitys

That's something I hope, that they let you get past the steam part and mess around with it as a little ARM Linux PC, which XBMC should run fine on. If not, though, you could always stream it from your main computer.
This would be cool as i'm interested in this feature if so. At least Netflix and HULU support would be really nice!

You can always add it as a non-seam game and stream it from your main PC. I'd much prefer native support.
The Steam Link is not a Steam Box. It will not have the capability of loading software directly onto the device, except for maybe firmware updates.

From what I understand though, you can just install it on your host computer and run it through steam. I don't see why you need it on the actual device, itself.

coz i wanna be using my main pc sometimes. if i was gonna do it that way, id just plug the hdmi into my plasma from my pc, dont want to do that.....
Why? If you're talking about using the TV for streaming while you're using the computer, you could just set the TV up as a second or third monitor. You'd get a better picture and no latency that way. If you've got everything close together like that, what's the point of getting a box at all?
I would like to see Kodi on Steam link as well.

For now i'm using a raspberry pi with openelec to get
a lightweight "multimedia" center.

The network architecture i like to have is my PC for gaming.
A network storage for video and audio files.

So you just need to boot the energy "wasting" machine
for playing video games.

Btw. the raspberry pi is not capable of playing 60 fps videos.
So i can't watch my gopro videos. The link should handle
the videos correct.

ive thought about getting a rasberry pi actually. i dunno i figure i could just throw a 270x into my steambox for a couple hundred buks when i get a chance. at least that way the thing is still configured the way i like it
You can add XBMC/KODI as a non-steam game and stream it from your games library.
Except he doesn't want to do that.
the steam link does not have a SOC/CPU. its just a mpeg4/h264 decoder.
So its technically not possible to get Linux/Android working on it.

That is not correct. It has a Marvell SOC with a Cortex A9. Check the Native apps subforum where the first version of the SDK was released and where one of the devs is trying to make Kodi work.

The Shield is a $200 device, plus accessories. This is a $50 device at the end of the day. You need ot be arealistic of what you can expect it to do.
