Steam Link

Steam Link

How is Steam's home streaming quality? Is the Steam Link going to be worth it?
I dont have a laptop, so I was never able to try it out. I have a good PC though, with a GTX 970 and a good wired router.

Assuming optimal conditions, what kind of picture quality can I expect? I know it will display 1080p at 60 frames, but is there a noticable amount of compression? I hope its far beyond youtube bitrates...

I would buy this thing right away if its really a $50 perfect little steam streamer.

I'm not sure about how the Steam Link will do it, but In-Home Streaming has always been really well done for me. Of course, YMMV, especially on your network environment and from laptop to Steam Link or any other device.

I streamed from my gaming pc to my older amd quad core laptop with pretty much 0 issues. The only 2 issues I have had were resolution problems with the game I was playing on the tv, and sometime the quality drops for a second, not really too often, but probably during bouts of either higher network traffic or a ton of gfx stuff to send at once when something big happens. I have played Borderlands 2 and sins of a solar empire just fine through in home streaming.

edit- imo its really amazing how well it works, I honestly didn't expect it to work half as well as it did

I stream from my gaming PC to my HTPC in our living room. HTPC runs with an Intel J1800 celeron 2 x 2,5 GHz and the integrated Intel HD graphics 4GB ram. I have no problems with streaming quality. Same grafphicquality as on my PC, no frame drops at 1080p and 2-3 ms latency. Works great for me.

What settings are you using? Hardware Encoding & Decoding? Bandwidth allocation? Fast, Balanced, Beautiful? I've got mine on balanced, with only hardware decoding on and I'm getting 20ms latency on the screen and about 5% frame drops. 1080p @ 60fps though, and controller latency is 1ms
